it cost to drive a Mercedes..

Finally confirm with the dealer, cost me $200 just to change the wheels. This will be the first and last time I'm so polite and beg them for a cheaper rate but got rejected. It's not like $200 is a lot for me, but paying triple the price to get the same simple job done, I expect not triple but at least double the quality. Guess this is my only choice since this is the one and only Mercedes dealer within 70 miles range. I will be watching them like a hawk when they change my wheel, better don't have a scratch on my car.

Pure complain,

Jeffrey.

Seems a little high, but my local tire shop charges 40$ just to rotate and balance 4 tires on any make car.

If the Benz dealer is going to change your wheels, that means demounting and remounting then balancing 4 tires. If they do the demount/mount by hand to protect the rims, hand torque the wheel lugs, and test drive I'm thinking at least an 1.5 -2 hours labor. So 200$ seems a litlle more reasonable.

I don't understand why you would use the dealer for something a tire shop is more than capable to handle.

I dont believe in rotating wheels. Just means you have to buy all four tyres in one go. Instead of 2 at a time. Plus with staggered wheels and direction tyres you cant swap front to back and if you swap side to side it involves a tyre change

I fully understand your thought, and this is also my dilemma here since all the tire shops refuse to change the wheels for me because they didn't sell the wheels to me so their policy states that they can't. I can understand why Firestoe refuse to change it for me so they are not liable if something goes wrong.

I also contact other dealer such as BMW and Ford, BMW charge me $260 labor just to change the wheels, Ford is more reasonable $66 but after reading some posts from other forum members that they had bad experiences(damage to bumper, wheel scratch etc.) So I decided to just rely on the MB dealer.

Wish me luck on Thursday!

I believed they use machine to do the demount/mount and not hand torque. $200 for wheels change is more expensive than MB dealer in Chicago and New York..

I would ask a local tire shop for a quote. Are you getting new rims?

Make sure the tire shop has the correct equipment for dynamic balancing (the local America's Tire Co. I go to even has the legs that go on the lugbolt holes coated with rubber/plastic to prevent scratches during balancing) and the proper machine to mount the tires/tyres on the new rims, again with coated arms.

I've never heard of such a thing. So, If I drive out to Indiana, feel my tire(s) may be unbalanced after my 1,200 mile trip or maybe I think I may have a leak, the tire shops won't touch it because I didn't previously give them business? Remind me to never have a tire problem in Indiana! In either case they may have to dismount and mount a tire to fix my problem.

Are you having the same tires installed on a new set of wheels or are you doing this as a way to rotate your tires? If this is the case is it really that cost effective to maybe squeeze out a few thousand miles?

I just hate it when I see other forum members paying too much for simple services or services they do not need. Cars are expensive to own when you let them be, forums are here so they are not.

EDIT:
Just saw your post with new wheels. I just did the same thing this spring. Got new tires in October 2011, then found wheels I liked at a price I couldn't let go. My indie charged me $50 to dismount, mount and balance my tires on to my new wheels, I didn't buy the tires from him.

Shop around, speak to owners/managers, talk of repeat business. It goes a long way.

I think the local America's Tire Co. charges roughly the same per wheel, to include dynamic balancing. $200 is not too far off.

I think I may have missed the point here. Are we talking about taking tyres off old wheels and fitting them onto new rims ???

Amazing - I have 4 or 5 local garages within 10 miles of home all begging for work. I've never had a problem at all, and last time paid $25 per wheel to have tires swapped and balanced...

I could have saved a bit, but the garage I chose had some really high-end, high speed balancing machine.

You also run into issues if you run directional tires swapping side to side.

It amazes me what dealers will charge for things and what people will pay for. Honestly call local tire shops and see if any deal with "custom" wheels and if they say yes just make certain the tire irons are coated as to not mar the wheel.. I'll never take a vehicle to a dealer unless there's a warranty covering something. Granted.. I also do everything myself..

Talking

Just got back from the service center, can't be more happier!

I ended up went to one of the Mazda dealer in town and did the wheel change. Service is really great, I had wonderful conversation to those guys who work on my car and bought all of them bottles of drinks. Also have a short smoke break with them. They treat my car like Lamborghini, every sigle steps are very careful while I was standing outside watching. Zero damage to interior/exterior of the car and all old/new wheels. Most importantly, they gave me a discount so I only paid $77.4 for everything! They just made my day!

PS: if anyone who's looking for buying the AMG wheels I took off please feel free to PM me great condition, got 20,000 miles on them.

Haha! great question! I was wondering why no one ask me this! I put one in the trunk(since two 18" won't fit in the trunk space), and 2 wheels on the passenger seat, one on the passenger floor without problem! Wrap all them with bubble packaging materials so it won't scratch or leave marks on the passenger seat!

Once thing I did notice is they gave me a new set of valve stem(probably a normal economy one, not the expensive MB dealer valve stem), but one of the valve stem is a tiny but little noticeable longer than the rest of three, about 0.35 inch longer, not a big problem but weird. Will just change them when my next tire change is due
