something interesting in today's (snail) mail

i got something interesting in today's mail. has anybody else heard of it? received it? done it?

the letter came from Research Design Specialists out of cerrits, ca. it reads,

Dear Vehicle Owner:

You are one of a select group of vehicle owners who may be eligible to participate in a vehicle evaluation. The evaluation is taking place in the Pomona area and is sponsored by automotive manufacturers who are very interested in your opinions about new vehicle concepts. Those who participate will receive $150.00 for about 2 1/2 to 3 hours of time. Thr project will take place in July.

This is a legitimate research project. We are very interested in your opinions. There will be no sales pitch and your name won't be given to any salespersons or mailorder firms. You can have an impact on future vehicle!

Primary Drivers of the following vehicles are eligible to participate:

Chrysler Crossfire, Honda S2000, Mazda MX-5, Mercedes SLK, Nissan 350Z, Pontiac Solstice, Porsche Boxster, Saturn sky.

If you would like to participate and you are the primary driver of one of the vehicles listed about, please fill out the questionnaire and return it to us in the enclosed postage-paid envelope.

If you have any questions about this project or our company, please call our office in Cypress, California at (800) 736-7970. We look forward to hearing from you.

the questionnaire contains some generic vehicle questions. there are no questions regarding personal information, financial information, etc. i haven't googled the company name or telephone number yet (but i will).

I got a letter ~5 years ago to evaluate cars similar to this letter, but was not specific to make.

Odd the BMW was left off the list.

I had a phone survey by Mini few days ago. Took about 30 minutes (if the lady had not joked and laughed with me I would have hung up after 2 minutes.) Asked # cars, makes etc (after 6 she stopped me and said enough, I still had 90+ to go). After the call I called the number she gave and the supervisor confirmed it was legit and asked if anything had been asked that worried me. I told her no, just wanted to compliment the lady for her great attitude and the laughs. Very unusual for me to accept calls like that, but my plugs for the SLK were very strong. One question: Is the Mini ***y? I replied no, not even a naked lady in a Mini is ***y but the SLK is, even without a lady.

I've done it about 2x in the past. Once at the LA Convention Center on a weekday and a second time (several years after the first) at an industrial area near Long Beach. It takes about 3 to 4 hours, the last one I attended had the surveys done in paper first and a different survey done electronically with the desktop computer. It was a near production GM product both times.

i did my homework and they appear to be legit. if it invovles some time behind the wheel (which i doubt), i'll likely do it. if it's just surveys, i wont.

The ones I went to were merely to comment at the outside looks, inside trim, etc., i.e., consumer survey. There is no actual drive behind the wheels. I personally think the monetary compensation is not commensurate with the time spent.
