FRANKFURT -- Daimler's Mercedes-Benz unit boosted sales by 13 percent to 165,706 in October, buoyed by continued growth in China.
Mercedes brand sales increased 10 percent to a record 155,189 vehicles. Sales at the Smart brand more than doubled, rising 103 percent to 10,517, helped by the launches of new ForTwo and ForFour models.
Mercedes is making gains on rivals BMW and Audi in China, the world's biggest car market, helped by a strong flow of new compact and SUV models popular with the country's fast-growing middle class.
Ola Kaellenius, Mercedes’s sales chief, said half of all the midsize GLK SUVs sold so far this year by the company have gone to customers in China. "We expect even stronger growth from that model's successor, the GLC," he said in a statement.
Mercedes brand deliveries in China rose to 33,088 in October, while in the U.S., volume increased 1.3 percent to 28,952. European sales were up 7.8 percent to 65,390.
Ten-month car sales for Mercedes and Smart cars have increased year-on-year by 16 percent to 1.63 million vehicles, with Mercedes brand's volume up 15 percent to 1.53 million and Smart sales up 37 percent to 98,535.
