French magazine Youngtimers has an article on the R170 this month.
Youngtimers are a new trend in France coming from Germany.
It concerns cars from the 80's 90's that are no longer used car and not yet vintage cars.
Main owners are from the Y generation and their most popular choices are the Renault Clio 16S, the Peugeot 205 GTI and the BMW M models. But it also concerns rarer cars like the Citroen CX Limo.
Some drivers are tempted by this era because they do not like the new car market (too much electronics cutting driving pleasure, anemic three cylinders engines due to Euro5 and Euro6 pollution regulations).
Some others simply keep their grand-parent car running for up 500.000 kms.
So youngtimers are not supposed to sleep in a garage but are daily drivers.
Anyway the R170 will soon celebrates its 20th birthday. So they test driven one from '98.
The takeaways of the article is no surprised to us.
Pre facelift engines are disappointing, car is sensitive to rust, alloy wheels are fragile, dash plastic is bad for a Merc, peeling issue,...
But they predict a great future for this car. They said it should follow the steps of the previous MB roadsters but for the moment the R170 is left in limbo...
So it makes a fine, fun and cheap daily driver.
The most famous French youngtimers is the Clio Williams, experts say the car will quote in the range of 50,000 Euro in the coming years.
