Man Killed When He is Ejected From Car onto California Freeway Sign after Crash

For Ipad users:

A 20-year-old man was killed when he was ejected from his car during a crash and landed on a California freeway sign, Highway Patrol officials said.

The man, whose identity is being withheld pending family notification, was driving on the southbound 5 Freeway when he and another vehicle collided in the Griffith Park area about 7 a.m. local time Friday, California Highway Patrol spokesman Officer Chad Guin said.

The man’s compact Ford, which was reported to be traveling at a high rate of speed, rolled over several times and he was ejected from the car, landing on a freeway sign for Exit 142, Colorado Street, which was in three-quarters of a mile, the spokesman said.

No one in the other vehicle was injured, he said.

“We have never seen anything like this, where a party was ejected and come to rest on a street sign,” Guin told INSIDE EDITION, saying the man was not believed to be properly wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The driver’s body was covered in a white sheet as firefighters worked to bring it down. It was not clear how long it remained on the sign, authorities said.

Traffic was blocked in the third and fourth lanes of the freeway as the accident was cleared, and all lanes in the southbound direction were blocked when the body was removed, Guin said.

Traffic reopened in all lanes about 11 a.m. local time, he said.

I've never understood why people don't buckle up.

Getting into a car, putting on the seatbelt is just a natural thing for me, I don't even have to think about it. It feels weird NOT to be strapped in!

I can understand it. Safety is not the primary concern for everyone.
When the law changed here, I had a hard time adjusting.

What changed my view was hanging around with police and NHS staff.

What some of them have had to deal with post crash makes for gruesome tales. So I took it
as civic duty back then.
As you get older your mortality becomes a higher priority.

Now I don't even turn the engine over until the belt is done.
