The Mercedes-AMG lineup has seen a lot of new models added to its ranks recently, and even though the Mercedes-AMG GT is the clear favorite, itís still hard to pick the best of the lot.
Thatís probably because theyíre quite different cars. Even the most recent of them, the Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe, has a very different audience than the sedan itís based on. They may share most of the underneaths (even though the Coupe actually has wider tracks, for example), but you canít deny the fact that the standard C63 can act as a perfectly practical saloon, while the C63 Coupe is a perfectly impractical coupe, no matter what Mercedes-AMG is trying to sell us.
And to make matters worse, thereís also a blast from the past present on the track, riding alongside these current models: the gullwing-doored Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. There, pick one, if you can.
Actually seeing the video might make things a little easier, as the AMG GT is the clear winner in the looks department. Itís a close call with the SLS AMG, but the more compact silhouette and the rampant noise it makes just cuts it for me, helped by the uninspired (even if full of historic references) silver paint of the SLS. Of course, itís all completely debatable, so feel free to have a different opinion.
The Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe makes a strong case for itself, too, its muscular demeanor making the C63 sedan seem a bit... mundane. It also appears severely outperformed in terms of handling, but the extent might be down to the drivers or to how hard they were actually pushing it.
Oh, and donít worry if the video starts with a BMW - do not adjust your sets, everything is under control. Just a few seconds later youíll get to hear that V8 roar, just before a white C63 enters the frame and starts waltzing the whole width of the piste. From there on, itís business as usual, the Affalterbach way.
