Driving gloves.... the point?

As my fans know I have a tendency to buy stuff and then take a second to think about what I bought.
Today's topic: Driving gloves

I have a pair on the way from Amazon and wonder why do I need driving gloves at my age?
Seriously, is there a raisson d'etre for driving gloves? I genuinely have no idea.

In the "old days" they were used to help onto the Plastic steering wheel, now I wear them to keep my fingers warm on those cold sunny days!

I'm ITCHING for a pair... The fingerless ones but must be MB Logo emblazoned! Cannot find them anywhere and am inches away from getting them made up for me! And I agree, they look super cool To the wearer. To the rest of the world, probably a little douchey. But their opinion doesn't count

all I have to say , style gurus, is...

take a look at Dents online catalogue. The finest English workmanship and quality, the like of which is hard to find these days.
I was bought a pair by my kids ( allegedly). Classic open-backed, in English tan. Lovely. Just the job on a brisk cool summer morning with the top down. Or on a cool autumn day with the top up. add a heated seat and it's Uncle Bob all the way.

Driving gloves have been around for years, from what I know they where worn to help grip the old plastic and wooden steering wheel. In the winter that can help keep your hand a little warmer, in the summer they can keep the sweat off the wheel. I have found that a good glove will also help in gripping a leather wheel and so I can drive with a lighter touch.

I will use them on long drives and when driving fast around corners.

If you want an open-finger style glove, an alternative to consider is cycling gloves...very comfortable, good grip, available with or without padding and a good selection of designs.

Craig beat me to it :-) One thing I hate is to look over and see another guy pull a big boog out of his snout. And the women are so much daintier. The gals sort of straighten their upper lip and just clean around the edges with their finger tip. They don't shove it all the way up there like the men do.

Wink Yes, three

Three reasons: I don't have a leather steering wheel and the "wood" (plastic?) is slippery; they keep hands warm in top down Winter driving; keep hands from being sun burned for top down Summer driving (and warm from a/c vents blowing directly on them) For the latter two reasons I didn't want finger-less nor bare knuckles. I also wanted tan to match the car's interior. I bought the Riparo Motorsport Gloves on Amazon which were the closest in color. I like them a lot and they are very reasonably priced. Whichever you buy be sure to get snaps and not Velcro closures as the Velcro sticks to itself when opened and makes it harder to put the gloves on.

They go back to the beginning of the motoring age when ladies or gentlemen would never be seen outdoors without gloves, or a hat for that matter.
The first cars had no roofs, owners had chauffeurs & gloves were part of the mandatory uniform as well as being a protection from the elements.
Come the evolution of sporting machinery gloves were needed for practical reasons, grip and protection. Leather being favoured for grip & the string-back design a fanciful mirror of the string-bound steering wheels.
The string-backed glove became obligatory wear for the sports car owner or the motorist who had fantasies of being a sporting driver yet was stuck behind the wheel of a humble saloon. Maybe a British thing this as middle-aged men drove around country lanes in Rover saloons, the ultimate in staid family cars, wearing string-backed driving gloves!
Drive a classic sports car & the string-backed glove & flat cap is essential wear. Do the same in anything built after 1970 you just look a twerp.
BUT I like others admit to the use of black fingerless cycling gloves with padded palms on long journey whatever the season or weather. There is a risk of looking a bit of a pretentious poseur especially if stepping out of a Porsche or Mercedes sports car so discretion is advisable.

I use batters gloves(golf gloves work, but are very thin and wear out rather quickly). They come in many colors(favorite team/school/birth stone/???) and aren't that expensive. I wear mine due to very dry skin on my hands.

"Think as I think," said a man,"Or you are abominably wicked; You are a toad."
And after I had thought about it, I said,
"I will, then, be a toad."(Thank you, Steven Crane)

Considering I wear jeans, a jean jacket, Hawaiian shirt and Converse All-Star sneakers everywhere I could use a wee bit o pretentiousness.
