TAMPA - Jorge Cruz loves his truck. But the cracks that creep along the dashboard worry this driver. Cruz is concerned that a piece of sharp plastic could affect the airbag’s ability to protect him.
Hundreds of GM owners have expressed similar concerns. In some cases, small cracks grow and turn into large holes that exposing the mechanical and electronic parts underneath.
A Wisconsin lawsuit alleges GM knows about this defect. According to the suit, GM hired a company to see if common cleaning products like armor all were to blame. But according to papers filed in court, the testing found cleaning products were not the cause
GM says this is not a safety issue - and most of the cars affected, the '07 to '11 models are older and out of warranty. The Chevy Tahoe tops the dash complaint list.
GM is not offering a fix, but is paying half the repair costs for some customers. Complaints to the government showed some dashes that were repaired still cracked again.
GM is simply saying customers should contact their dealership for help and adds this issue does not impact vehicle safety. The manufacturer is also trying to get the lawsuit dismissed.
