Todays lesson of the day

I just purchased a home and wanted a new kitchen faucet. I purchased the faucet. I hired the plumber to come instal said new faucet. The new faucet [mind you] is a sensor motion activated one, hence me not being able to do it myself.

Two lads in their 30's show up, chests puffed.. we can do anything. We'll have this installed in 20 minutes. An hour later I hear BANGING coming from my sink. They are literally trying to bang out the old fixture and insist another plumber has to come and "cut" the old one off because it's rusted solid.

Sure.. right okay.. then come cut it, i've already paid you, be quick about it. The 3rd installer comes along [lad in his upper 40's] and I watch him remove the old faucet in 5 minutes WITH A TOOL. And I say "don't you need to cut it off?"

No ma'am, there is a tool for this type of faucet, the other plumbers must not have had the knowledge. No cutting, no drama, no fuss or muss. Yet they were all from the same company. Sometimes two heads are not better than one, and just because they tell you something has to be done, you don't have to believe them. It doesn't mean they are right, especially when it involves power tools FGS!

Moral of the story? Don't believe the repair man if your gut tells you their supposed fix sounds fishy or it took them too long to find it to begin with.

sadly, competence is hard to find these days….thankfully services like Angies List help weed out the fools….but its sad that this stuff happens as often as it does….

Sounds like sometimes older is better after all

Did you let the older guy finish the job, or did the 2 nubs do it?

Nope..the older guy finished the job without a problem. He also finished the installation on the new commercial stove as well. He looks exactly like the maytag guy from the commercials, and sounds like him. It was quite an ironic humorous day so to speak.

In any event, many contractors, and a lot of shopping around. I call him mr. maytag now. He is called for all updates and repairs.

don't put 100% faith in Angies list.

I frequent a builders forum and dealing with the list from their point of view (references etc) ain't what it appears. and I don't mean getting bad reviews. unfortunately it has been awhile since the topic came up. IIRC it was to due what the contractors are charged by angies list.

I'm a big fan of homeadvisor.com that's a free service and ive used it for years. But you have to still screen people and price shop your projects then choose the most qualified.

I say it now and I've said it before...If you want it done right...DO IT YOURSELF....LOL I've always done all our home repairs, I've tiled floors, moved toilets, hung ceiling fans and lights, installed a dishwasher, hung solid raised panel doors, built a work bench in the garage, installed new garage doors and openers, did plumbing, painting, wall papering...just to name a few...No wonder I'm so tired now !!

Hi there.. over here the advice is never to never pay up front .. but perhaps you have different rules ??

Anyway, it's good to know that there is still a place in the work-market for the older person who suffers from .. knowledge, experience and common-sense !!

mustbe....

we're quickly getting to a generation of people that will have to call someone to change a bulb or cook their dinner... Schools have dropped shop classes and "home ec" (as well as gym class) in favour of....god knows what...

I had a *lot* of work done that day-so the faucet was just one item on the list of to'do's. New house.. new fun.. you all know the drill Next month it's the replacement of the sump pump and a new backup system.

DF-if I could have Jarvis run my house I would. I'm all about the technology. But I'm a wicked Betty in the kitchen as well. People need to have life skills, I completely agree.
