10/20 Toyota recalls 247,000 vehicles in U.S. over Takata air bag issue

By Ben Klayman

DETROIT (Reuters) - Toyota Motor Corp <7203.T> recalled 247,000 cars, SUVs and pickup trucks in the United States on Monday because they are equipped with potentially defective front passenger air bag inflators from Japan's Takata Corp <7312.T> that can rupture and spray metal shrapnel, according to U.S. safety regulators.

That raised the number of vehicles affected by regional recalls launched in June by several automakers due to the Takata air bags to more than 4.5 million.

The regional recalls by Toyota and other automakers including Honda Motor <7267.T> and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' Chrysler Group began in certain high-humidity areas of the United States after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) started investigating reports of air bag explosions in Florida and Puerto Rico.

Prompted by NHTSA, Takata and automakers have been trying to determine whether exposure to high humidity caused any defect in the inflators collected though the regional recalls.

"At this point, the issue appears to be a problem related to extended exposure to consistently high humidity," NHTSA said in a statement on Monday. "However, we are leaving no stone unturned in our aggressive pursuit to track down the full geographic scope of this issue."

Toyota recovered replaced air bag inflators from areas of South Florida and Takata evaluated them starting in August, according to the NHTSA documents. On Oct. 10, Takata informed Toyota that a number of the inflators performed "improperly" during testing. Five days later, after reviewing the data with NHTSA, Toyota decided on the recall.

Over the last six years, Takata has recalled about 16 million vehicles globally for defective air bags, including the regional recalls.

The Toyota vehicles affected by Monday's recall are from model years 2002 through 2005, according to the NHTSA documents. They include the Lexus SC coupe, Toyota Corolla small car, Corolla Matrix small car, Sequoia SUV and Tundra full-size pickup. Also part of the recall are General Motors' Pontiac Vibe, which was built by Toyota.

The vehicles being recalled are registered or originally sold in areas of South Florida, along the Gulf Coast, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, Saipan and American Samoa, according to the NHTSA documents.

Officials from Takata and Toyota could not be reached for immediate comment on the recall.

Dealers will replace the front passenger airbag inflator with a newly made replacement, but if a replacement is not available as a temporary measure the dealer will disable the air bag and advise the customer not to use the front passenger seat, according to the NHTSA documents.

US agency warns car owners to get air bags fixed

US agency warns car owners to get air bags fixed due to potentially deadly inflator problem

DETROIT (AP) -- A potential safety crisis over defective air bags widened Monday as the U.S. government issued an urgent plea to more than 4.7 million people to get their cars fixed.

The inflator mechanisms in the air bags can rupture, causing metal fragments to fly out when the bags are deployed in crashes.

Safety advocates say at least four people have died from the problem and there have been multiple injuries. They also say more than 20 million vehicles in the U.S. are equipped with the faulty air bags.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration warned people whose cars have been recalled during the past two years for faulty air bag inflators to take them to dealers right away. The inflators are made by Takata Corp., a Tokyo-based supplier of seat belts, air bags, steering wheels and other auto parts. So far, automakers have recalled about 12 million vehicles worldwide because of the problem.

"This message comes with urgency," NHTSA said in a statement. The agency has been investigating the problem since June, and has cited reports of six inflators rupturing, causing three injuries.

The warning covers cars made by Toyota, Honda, Mazda, BMW, Nissan, General Motors and Ford. Passenger or driver air bags or both could be affected depending on the vehicle.

Toyota issued the latest recall Monday, covering passenger air bags in 247,000 older model vehicles including the Lexus SC, Corolla, Matrix, Sequoia and Tundra.

Like many of the other recalls, the Toyota recall covers vehicles in South Florida, along the Gulf Coast, in Puerto Rico, Hawaii, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, Saipan and American Samoa — all areas that have high absolute humidity. Toyota, in documents posted on the NHTSA website, said the company and Takata are still trying to pinpoint the cause of the rupture and to gauge the influence of high absolute humidity.

Absolute humidity is a measurement of water vapor in the air, while relative humidity, which is commonly used in weather reports, measures air moisture content relative to the air temperature.

Toyota has been testing the air bags, and it found an unusually high incidence of inflator failures along the coasts, according to spokesman John Hanson. The investigation continues and the recall could be expanded to more areas, Hanson said.

10 Automakers Hit Worst By Takata Airbag Recall

ERIC SCHAAL
Oct 24

10. Mitsubishi

Thus far, the NHTSA has identified 11,985 Mitsubishi vehicles that are potentially affected by the recall of cars with Takata airbags. Vehicle recall notices will be posted on Safercar.gov as they are confirmed. Owners of Mitsubishi vehicles from the time period are recommended to check back periodically to see if the NHTSA has added a specific vehicle. Here are the two models currently affected.

2004-2006 Mitsubishi Lancer
2006-2007 Mitsubishi Raider

9. Subaru

At least 17,516 Subaru vehicles are named in the recall as potentially affected, including some of the automaker’s most popular vehicles. Performance sedans wearing the 2004 and 2005 Impreza badge (e.g., Impreza WRX and Impreza WRX STI) are potentially affected, as is the discontinued Baja.

2003-2005 Baja
2003-2005 Legacy
2003-2005 Outback
2004-2005 Impreza

8. Ford

So far, at least 58,669 Ford vehicles have been entered on the recall list for defective Takata airbags. The list includes the limited-edition GT supercar that appeared in the 2005 and 2006 model years, and continues to be among the most valuable U.S. automobiles at auction. Ford’s signature Mustang was not spared in the current recall, either.

2004 Ranger
2005-2006 GT
2005-2007 Mustang

7. Mazda

At least 64,872 Mazda vehicles were included in the latest “potentially affected” list, which may include automobiles counted twice by the NHTSA. Worth noting is the fact only an estimated 10% of about 7.8 million vehicles with defective Takata airbags have been fixed. These Mazda models have been recalled.

2003-2007 Mazda6
2006-2007 Mazda Speed6
2004-2008 Mazda RX-8
2004 -2005 MPV
2004 B-Series Truck

6. General Motors

Though the exact number of recalled General Motors vehicles has not been finalized, several have already been cited for Takata airbag problems in 2014. Included in the group are the Chevy Cruze from model years 2013 and 2014, in addition to other models by GMC, Chevy, Saab, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, and Cadillac dating back to as early as 2003. The NHTSA has listed two GM models in the current recall, but Car and Driver counted at least 150,000 cars with Takata airbag defects on the road. Only two cars have been named in the current NHTSA announcement.

2003-2005 Pontiac Vibe
2005 Saab 9-2X

5. Chrysler

The Chrysler Group has 371,309 potentially affected vehicles on the recalled list for Takata airbag issues. Included were Dodge Ram pickups from six model years, ranging from light-duty to heavy-duty trucks. Ram pickups have been one of the most recalled vehicles of the past 25 years.

2003-2008 Dodge Ram 1500
2005-2008 Dodge Ram 2500
2006-2008 Dodge Ram 3500
2006-2008 Dodge Ram 4500
2008 Dodge Ram 5500
2005-2008 Dodge Durango
2005-2008 Dodge Dakota
2005-2008 Chrysler 300
2007-2008 Chrysler Aspen

4. BMW

Seven model years of BMW 3 Series cars were included in the NHTSA’s recall of vehicles with defective Takata airbags. BMW has 627,615 potentially affected vehicles on the list to date, including the M3 sport coupe and convertible from six model years.

2000-2005 3 Series Sedan
2000-2006 3 Series Coupe
2000-2005 3 Series Sports Wagon
2000-2006 3 Series Convertible
2001-2006 M3 Coupe
2001-2006 M3 Convertible

3. Nissan

Automakers based in Japan rounded out the top three on the Takata airbag recall. The NHTSA counted 694,626 Nissan and Infiniti vehicles sold in the U.S. as potentially affected in its October 22 list. Nissan announced on October 23 that its global recall with Takata airbags would increase by 260,000 vehicles, though few (if any) were sold to consumers in the U.S. or its territories.

2001-2003 Nissan Maxima
2001-2004 Nissan Pathfinder
2002-2004 Nissan Sentra
2001-2004 Infiniti I30/I35
2002-2003 Infiniti QX4
2003-2005 Infiniti FX35/FX45

2. Toyota

Corolla, one of the world’s best-selling nameplates, was listed among the Takata airbag recalls for four model years, which likely constitutes the majority of the cars headed back to Toyota service centers. The total number of Toyota vehicles is currenly 877,000. That figures represents the following five vehicles as well as several models of the Pontiac Vibe that Toyota manufactured for GM during the period in question.

2002-2005 Lexus SC
2002-2005 Toyota Corolla
2003-2005 Toyota Corolla Matrix
2002-2005 Toyota Sequoia
2003-2005 Toyota Tundra

1. Honda

Of all the automakers, Honda will be regretting its partnership with Takata most. More than 5 million Honda and Acura vehicles (nearly two-thirds of the total) have been named by the NHTSA as potentially affected in its massive Takata airbag recall. The current total is 5,051,364, though there may be vehicles that were counted twice and more vehicles to come as the investigation continues. Since 1990, nearly 9 million Accords have been recalled for various reasons. Here are the 10 nameplates with potentially defective Takata airbags, stretching over seven model years, starting in 2001.

2001-2007 Honda Accord
2001-2002 Honda Accord
2001-2005 Honda Civic
2002-2006 Honda CR-V
2003-2011 Honda Element
2002-2004 Honda Odyssey
2003-2007 Honda Pilot
2006-Honda Ridgeline
2003-2006 Acura MDX
2002-2003 Acura TL/CL
2005-Acura RL
