The Death of the MT has been greatly Exaggerated (Woolly's Revenge)

The article listed below shows the demise (if 300,000 units in 2011 can be called a demise) of the Manual Transmission.

https://autos.yahoo.com/blogs/motora...194033483.html

That said, they have started to inch back up since then. This is US data only, so it would be interesting to see what's happening in other markets.

Seriously though, that's very much a 'merricun thang - in Europe, MTs outnumber Auto's by a large percentage.

Not only a "'Murrican" thang, but one that Mercedes-Benz has aided and abetted over here, much to my chagrin. We have loved our '00 W202 C230 Kompressor, but many times I've wished that I could have ordered the 5-speed manual transmission available everywhere but here. The C-Class has had a manual option like the SLK, but few are to be found. I've always thought that the CLK deserved to be given a stick, especially the base 320/350 models. But sadly, too many Americans equate an automatic transmission with luxury. That, and most appear too obsessed with pursuing activities like texting, or putting on makeup, or holding their dog while driving to operate a car which requires all four limbs working in coordinated fashion to drive.

Honestly, I think because of the obsession with texting and other activities that distract drivers we should go back to manual transmissions, kind of hard to be distracted when your required to change those gears!

It was interesting to me the change in the philosophy. The article references one manufacturer going to an eight speed automatic transmission for increased fuel economy. Back in the first oil crisis everyone went to manual transmissions for the same reason.

That said, I think the american lifestyle comments are dead on. How can you shift gears while drinking your Grande Mocha Soy Latte ? I mean really now.

They mentioned the Nissan Frontier - you can get a manual but it is a $1K option. The automatic is the base model.

Well, Gene, apparently you can...but you'll likely get the revs a little wrong, and spill that latte all over your stereo. At least you will in our R171s!

And there is NOTHING worse that spilled milk in a car.....especially when it dries up! The wifey loves her lattes (not allowed in either of my cars!). Notoriously, even if shes not drinking them, they put the cap on the cup and they will spill out through the little hole in the lid. When I clean her car for her, if a drop has spilled that she doesn't clean up, that cakes on her interior and it's terrible. UGH!!!!!
