Driver given red light camera ticket for car he doesn’t own, has never driven, from a city he’s never visited

For weeks, Andrew Rainey of Orlando, Florida has been fighting a red light camera ticket he received for a car he doesn’t own, and never drove, from a camera in a city he’s never been to. As reported by WFTV Channel 9, Miami-Dade County sent the 20-year-old student the ticket along with a picture of what the court was claiming to be his car committing the violation.

But, several key pieces of information gave Rainey pause. He explained what he was thinking when he saw the citation, “’Wait I’ve never been to Miami. What is this?’ and then I started looking at it more closely and I was like, ‘Oh, this is not good.’”

The violating car's license plate (top) compared to the license plate on Andrew Rainey's truck. (WFTV)

The license plate shown in the fuzzy pictures sent by Miami-Dade County looked very similar to Rainey’s license plate, but the fourth letter was questionable and could be a “D,” “Q,” or “0.”

Aside from that point, Rainey saw a more obvious discrepancy. “Immediately I noticed the roundness of the car. I was like, my car’s a truck. It has a square back,” said Rainey.

With that evidence, Mr. Rainey called the courts to get the ticket dismissed, thinking it would be a simple matter to clear up. It wasn’t. “They told me I’d have to take it up with the Miami-Dade court,” Rainey recounted. He would have to travel to Miami to appeal the ticket in person. While the busy student with two jobs can’t afford to take the trip, he is now trying to make it to Miami because if it isn’t resolved Rainey says, “it’s pending on suspending my license.”

WFTV reporter Renee Stoll received no response when attempting to contact the Miami-Dade court.

With a display of good common sense - St. Petersburg, Florida is eliminating its Red Light Cameras. They did increase revenue for the city - but not enough to justify the cost; and they increased rear end accidents - as people slammed on the brakes on yellow lights - causing the people behind them to run into them.

Good for St. Pete! Now the rest of the State should follow suite..

Here is also a good one heard on the radio the other day:

Quote:
Over the past few months King Filip of the Belgian has received dozens of speeding fines from the authorities in France.

The King is accused of having broken the speed limit on numerous occasions in his official car with registration number '1'.
The French police tell the king that if he doesn’t pay up his car will be confiscated.
The daily Het Laatste Nieuws reports that all of the dozens of fines issued to our Head of State since he took over as King last July were for speeding and other traffic offences alledgedly committed in France by the royal BMW 7 series.
However, no fines have been issued to other cars that form the royal motorcade.
Furthermore, the royal BMW has only been in France once since King Filip became monarch.
An investigation was launched and a computor error was found to be behind the deluge of fines that had been issued to the King of the Belgians.
Since the introduction of a new vehicle registration system in Belgium in 2010, most new regisration numbers start with the number 1.
However, not all French speed cameras have not been adapted to take account of this and if there is the slightest problem reading a numberplate, the French traffic police computor only remembers the first number of the numberplate, in this case '1'.
As this is also the King's numberplate, fines have been issued even though King Filip and his car weren't even in France at the time when the alledged speeding incidents took place.
The French authorities accept that the fines were isued in error and they have since been quashed.

The king doesn't have diplomatic immunity? In the US NY city has a major problem with the diplomatic cars from the UN, can't do anything about their breaking traffic/parking laws.

I once received a speeding fine from the other side of Australia and the only way i got it quashed was because I could prove I was in Perth at the time....i had received a red light camera fine the day before !.... and the court had to accept my vehicle couldn't have got across Australia in less than 24 hours.
