New Toy

Got a newsletter the other day from my local dealer with a special offer for a 30GB limited edition MB iPod - my old 20GB Sony NW-HD1 is getting a bit old & battered, so I treated myself. I also got an RF remote, so I can use it easily on the bike/ in the car (plugged into the AUX socket in the glove box). Now, I've just got to load 4-500 cd's - yawn...

photoshop has been used for a few different image editing programs of the years, but I think Adobe has cliamed the right to adopt it as there own. I think the reason people relate it to a mac is that mac's have always been the tool choice for design users in many industries. its an age old argument why macs are so much better than PC's. I used to use Photoshop on a mac at university and then on a PC after class and they were very close indeed.

I thought the whole PC - mac thing was a complete image thing. its the different between an architect and a civil enginneer. one likes to see there ideas magically apear into reality the other likes to understand the why's and hows of all the nitty gritty.

I equate it more to advertising expendatures. Same reason iPod is a household name for mp3 players when there are a ton of better players on the market for far less money (but they have cool commercials ). Same reason VHS outsold Beta in VCRs, Beta was far superior. I mean come on...it only took Apple/Mac what...a decade to come out with a mouse with more than one button on it?!?! ...OK, I'll stop.

I think if apple had won the home computing war rather than the IBM-PC and MS, we would be ten years behind in home computing technology. it's only the high competition in a standardised platform with the 3rd party hardware venders (IBM, INTEL, CYRIX,AMD, 3dfx Interactive, Matrox, ATI, NVIDIA) going teeth to teeth over the years. just my opinion.

DesignoSLK - Mate, I really don't think this is the case, Of recent years your certainly correct, but once upon a time apple only sole computer because there was a niche in industry that thought they were cool and were the only thing to be used for design as PC's were dull and boring. I was at univversity where all the arty design people swore they could onloy use macs. I was very computer literate. I used both macs and PC's, i asked them why and they couldn't say.

Hey easty...I guess I'm just biased against any of the Mac graphic software since I cut my teeth on Corel Draw 5 and have upgraded through the years to Corel 12 Suite. I'm holding off on "X3". I don't really have a need for it just yet. It is about "need", right?

i believe HP came up with the GUI and the mouse....apple is remembered because they marketed it successfully.

Macs definitely have their advantages in certain respects (true parallel processing) but they lost out because there wasn't enough competition.

That was my point exactly...key word here is "marketed". Because something is a "household name" doesn’t necessarily make it the best product. IMMHO
