2013 LA Auto Show & Connected Car Expo

Managed to get a press pass. Much improved show over recent years. Big focus on technology and connecting to "the fourth screen" in the dash of your car. Lots of talk, a good deal of innovative stuff. Car manufacturers still stuck on creating a disparate hive of competing interfaces and products. Why can't everybody just get my smartphone on the dash and let an app market prevail? Brian Cooley of CNET moderated a great panel at the start. Fun fun day.

Funny how they added the CCE tag to the show to keep it fresh. In no time all this in-car connectivity will be so ubiquitous we'll look back and laugh at how in 2013 "connected car" was even a thing.

Anybody else coming to play? Main show floor opens tomorrow, Wed.

I'm almost in heaven here with all the high tech car gadgetry.

GT AMG Design Exercise 2013

Unveiled less than 24 hours ago after a trip down from San Jose, and lowered in using a crane. This extreme mock up is reportedly the inspiration for a vehicle to target the Porsche 911 market within a couple years.

Looks to me like a Corvette with an exaggerated 50's era 300 SL grill, with the usual impractically scaled-up wheels of those beautiful pencil drawings that car designers do. The heads up display is a real thing from the S65 AMG, so we'll probably see that cropping up on more MB models before long.

Apparently in the near future rear view mirrors will become vestigial organs that house HD rear view cameras.

Time machine

Though more angular as was the trend of the era, it's an interesting perspective to see how forward thinking some designers were. E.g. GM's Aerovette designed by Zora Arkus-Duntov about 50 years ago. Minimalist interior, flat panel display, and dial controls on center console at arm's length to reduce driver distraction, elements that have made it into the 2014 S-class and others.
