As a kid I worked part time in a paint shop - it was located in a WW2 hangar in my home town, which had been a base for the British Commonwealth Air Training Program (training pilots from all over the world, including the US). The first aircraft I got to work on was a Spit MkIX, two seater, ex Irish Air Force. We did it up in Battle of Britain colours (MkIXs didn't exist then, but the owner felt it was appropriate) with the call letters of R-AF (also wrong); registry was CF-RAF. Owner was Don Plumb - killed in his Mustang many years later. We also did two P-40s for him in Flying Tigers colours.
Spitfire is a gorgeous and capable aircraft, but an absolute mother to build and work on when compared to the Mustang.
