Been really thinking about getting another roadster.

So lately, I've seen a few 2013 Porsche Boxster (981) driving around and it really catches my eyes. I can't stop looking at it, I would drive up close to get another glance. I was really impressed with it last year when I had it for two days, unfortunately, I didn't get to drive it as much as my wife, she took it for 1.5 days. The more I see it the more I want it. But there is one dilemma, I have a two car garage and I have four cars. The minivan and SUV can't go, they are our daily drivers and bad weather cars. The 911 isn't going anywhere soon, I absolutely love that car. So the SLK gets the short end of the stick. I don't want to part with it, every time I get in and drop the top, it reminds me of why I had it for so long. But I really want the new Boxster. Decisions, decisions, decisions.

Fortunately that's not an issue for me due to nature, I'm too tall!

Setting that aside, I do prefer the looks of the Porsche. The SLK seems handling a bit too comfortable for a sports car. A perfect illustration of this is my boss who swapped from SLK to a Porsche, then back again when he found the Porsche too direct and harsh for routine journeys. It wasn't helped by living on a cobbled street, but he admits it was perfect for the occasional fun drive.

Anyway you've got a 911, so why not have the SLK to give you a comfy alternative? Its important to have a varied diet!

What he said!

I'm only 6'1"+, but could never get comfortable in a Boxster or Cayman. I'm prepared to make to make several compromises to be able to sit down comfortably for a few hours. My SLK isn't quite as comfortable as my dear departed 928S4, but those things are becoming dinosaurs now. You've got the 911 for SOTP driving...

Of course, we are on a SLK forum, if I asked this on a Boxster forum, it'll be a Boxster, no-brainer, SLK can't hold a candle to the Boxster, blah, blah.

Hardtop was one of my major criteria's when I first purchased the SLK, Porsche will never do that as it adds another 400lbs to the car. The Boxster weighs less than 3,000lbs w/o all the options. I agree hardtop looks a lot better but with my SLK, I usually drive top down so it probably doesn't matter as the top will probably be down most of the time if I get a Boxster.

Yes, me too, the more I see it the more I prefer it to the SLK, I can only think of one thing that wins on the SLK, which is the hardtop. The handling, the interior, newer gadgets, seats, comfort (until you press the sports button), the Boxster wins in every category, thought of another one. The airscarf is cool, wished all brands have this. Yes, the variety is a 500hp turbo monster (911) and a light weight roasta (Boxster)

Not concerned about head room as I am at an avg height so most cars seems like they are custom build for me. . My SLK isn't comfortable at all, it lacks lumbar support. I can't find a position where I can get comfortable. Porsche's have great comfortable and sporty looking seats. Even their Carbon Fiber racing seats are more comfortable than the SLK's, it's basically a thin piece of cloth wrapped in CF.

Right. When I started looking for a new convertible last December, it came down to two choices... a Boxster and an SLK. I never owned a Porsche or MBZ product before. The net of why I ordered the SLK instead of a Boxster was:
1) Boxster is a soft top. No way for me. Too loud inside even when it's up, and I don't like a soft top that is just asking for vandals or other problems. Slashed tops is something I've seen a couple times, and don't want to worry myself with that even though I stay away from "some parts of town".
2) Some of us complain about MBZ nickel and diming with options. As I played more and more with the Porsche and MBZ configurators, they left me with the Boxster was a whole lot more money for comparative options I'd desire.
3) Its very subjective, and we all get turned on by different things. Looks of both rides is super, but I give the nod to my SLK with it's more classic, retro, art deco-ish interior compared to the sports car interior of the Boxster. I was looking for something that was a more elegant roadster like I knew and had lived with my Lexus SC430, vs the Boxster that to me exudes more of a sports car in its look.
4) The SLK also seemed more spacious to me as I sat in the drivers seat of both at the auto show, and for some reason I left with an impression the Boxster was even harder to get out of than the SLK.

I'm very happy with my decision owning my SLK, but honestly, I'm sure anyone that has a Boxster loves that toy just as well. It's great having choices and decisions to make! Good luck with yours!

It's comfortable when you want it to be (with Porsche Active Suspension Management) and not when you press the sports button. Handling is on another level. I had the opportunity to drive this on a track, autocross, and had it for an extensive test drive last year.

I really enjoyed the whole Porsche experience. Something that Mercedes really lack. I feel like once you purchased your MB, the relationship with the manufacturer is over. When I brought my Porsche, I get free subscriptions to Porsche magazines, they send me a 50th anniversary poster set of all the 911's throughout the years. I get invites to Porsche driving events, get to drive all their different models. 2-3 driving events per year. I was invited the Boxster, Cayman, and even the Jaguar F-type (Porsche dealer also sells Jaguars) launch parties with options to take it home for two days. I did that with the Boxster and Cayman. Didn't do it with the F-type, didn't want to park a $120K car outside with no intentions to buy.

The Boxster is a sweet ride. I got rid of mine four years ago and have missed it; however, I had issues with the soft top and that still sticks with me to this day. You can't go wrong with the SLK's hard top. Maybe a 2014 SLK? The SL 550 is pretty sweet as well. As you've mentioned, you've got a major decision to make. Good luck!

Every model will have it's problems, our SLK's isn't problem free. I've never warmed up to the styling of the r172, A big no on the SL, too big, too heavy, I'm looking for a light weight roadsta. It's winter time here, got a lot of time to ponder. When I first ordered my SLK, I had asked for Orion blue but that color was discontinued in MY06. Maybe I'll get a blue Boxster.

You bring up an excellent point and you're right that every model has its issues. You can't go wrong with a Porsche; the power and handling are out of this world. Good luck!

Maybe, I was driving top down again today in the SLK and really enjoyed it so not totally convinced just yet. Maybe, I just ready for something new.

I had thought about it, was looking into car lifts, I got plenty of space to go up. Not sure if I want to get a double lift. A single 4 post lift will work but then it requires planning if I want to drive the car that is on top. The process of backing out one car, then lower the lift and driving another car on the lift, then raise it back up, then driving the other car in, doesn't sound to appealing to me right now. I have a feeling if I get the Boxster, the SLK will be up there quite often. The Boxster will probably be PDK so my wife can take it out when she wants to so I don't see the Boxster up on the lift much unless I am doing maintenance or modding it.

Can you go down? Get a lift that stacks two cars. Then you just need to press a button when you know which car you want to drive.
