I heard one report saying 60 railway lines into London were blocked by falling trees on Monday.

Fortunately northern England was relatively calm and very wet. Woolly's girls will be safe but soaking.

I've been working on track at Gatwick for the last 3 months - Monday was really peaceful, no trains trying to squish me. It made me laugh though that before Notwork Rail were to open the lines, they sent an empty train up to check the lines were clear & safe - and it ran into a fallen tree

Yep it was a bit tricky here Sunday night in to Monday, although not as bad as the hurricane of 1987 which tore of part of my roof and chimney stack at the time and caused damage and injury/deaths across the UK.

Sadly there were some fatalities on Sunday/Monday though no where near as bad as 1987. I have a family member in the emergency services who was coordinating the response to the poor 17 year old girl that was crushed to death in a mobile home in Kent. Very sad.

Dicks!

Didn't they send a train over a bridge to test it after a storm a few years ago? And the bridge collapsed. And the train had passengers on board. And they died.

Was anyone prosecuted for that?

It is amusing that someone looking for fallen trees ended up bumping into one. However I’m not sure it merits the “dicks” comment.

The only way to check if railway line is clear is to run a train along it. Also have some respect for people who take on the job of checking the line is safe, they put their own safety at risk to run along a line that might be blocked or damaged in order to assure the safety of the public.

I can’t find any record of fatalities after a train ran over a collapsing bridge - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...-privatisation

River Towy, 19 October 1987; 4 killed: river flood washed bridge away; train fell in river. Found at http://maps.thefullwiki.org/List_of_...United_Kingdom. Before Notwork Rail's time. Longer ago than I'd thought. So, apologies to NR.

It seems that was a passenger train that proceeded at walking pace along some track that was flooded, also an engineer walked the track to check the depth of flood before the train went through the water.

Unfortunately, two bridges further along the line had been undermined by scour and collapsed overnight This was after they left the flooded track that was being inspected.

So yes, the train was used for an inspection but that bit went smoothly. The bridge collapse was a separate unforeseen incident.
