Very OT : Central heating - relay sparking

Anyone know how best to clean a PCB-mounted relay which is sparking?

I've tried cleaning the contacts with a little sandpaper, but that hasn't helped at all.

Is there anything other than dirty contacts that may make it spark?

It's on the PCB which control my central heating boiler. I've ordered a new PCB but that won't be here til Thursday and it may get a little cold in our house if I can't get this think working tonight.

There should be a capacitor and resistor in parallel with the relay contacts. It sounds like one of these has failed, hence the sparking.

Good thing I've order a new one, then.

I managed to make it work by keeping one of the contacts on the relay open by wedging a piece of plastic into it. Watching carefully to see what happens. Anything weird, off it goes and we all get cold.

That should work, but you need to remember to stop it after running for a while. Basically acting like the relay is cutting on and off

Thanks. That's good advice.

Have switched it off for the night. Up early to switch back on so that everyone else in the house will be warm.
