There are two different versions of Techron. There’s the complete fuel system cleaner and the fuel injector cleaner. Decisions, decisions. I’m asking our guru of all things Techron. @jbanks15 Which one should I feed my Garbage Scow?

complete fuel system cleaner
which includes the injectors since it is 'complete'

The M112/M113 family of engines don’t typically have a lot of issues with carbon buildup on the back of valves (like direct injection engines do), since fuel is constantly spraying on the back of the intake valves, which effectively keeps them clean.

That is an effective non answer. How do you know “as needed“? If it has symptoms, isn’t that too late?

Not trolling, I apologize if I appeared that way. No actually, since my injector became “defective“ and entailed some rather significant machinations to get rectified, I was concerned with proactive steps I could take to avoid a repeat. I did not have symptoms until it was too late. My vehicle apparently functioned correctly until it did not. By then the damage was done and I had to have the vehicle flat bedded 100 miles and a rather costly injector replacement. I do not know what caused the injector to fail, but it was at a relatively low miles and the car had been operated on top tier fuel for several thousand miles prior to its malaise. It had exactly one tank of offbrand fuel put in it prior to injector failure. The injector failed two tanks later. I don’t know if it was coincidence, and I’m wondering if I should have a bottle of TECHRON in the car in case I have to put non-top tier fuel in it.

never put non top tier fuel in bottom line.
bad/cheap gas is just that...bad and cheap....something even techron won't cure.

Techron

I had a independent Porsche Tech tell me years ago to use Techron about every 3 months in my P-car. I use it or the Lucas injector cleaner periodically in all of my vehicles except for the Diesel. With Techron the prescribed method is to put a full bottle (small one) into 1/4 tank of fuel and drive normal for the rest of the day. Overnight the car will cool. Next day, warm up the car and then run the $#!t out of it. i.e., full throttle, hard acceleration to redline in each gear. Full autobahn experience. The product works overnight to loosen, soften and help dissolve the hard deposits and varnish from the injectors, intake valves, and other important moving parts. Depending on how junked up your engine is and the lighting conditions, you my see an white/lt grey cloud of gunk blowing out of the exhaust for a short while. Not to worry, that is normal.

When you get tired of being a hooligan, go fill the tank with top tier fuel and drive normally for the rest of the tank. If you can get in some fast interstate that is better. The Lucas product and I think the Techron also have a slight octane boost effect also which may help with elimination of the knock/ping/wheeze right away. Depending on your driving style and normal daily route, you may need it more often.
