I am interested to know what everyone's preference is - R170, R171, R172
They are all great cars and all have their virtues.
Personally I love the styling of the R171, hence buying one recently, but understand how some may love the classic R170 or more modern R172

Show your preference in the POLL.

There is no r173

I got caught by that.

The SLC is another R172.

I can't vote for a single model, each has it's merits.

Started with a 230 and loved it to bits. Age and lack of previous care by former owners meant bye bye time.
I'll never trade my 55 R171 for any other model, it suits me.
The R172 interior and things like the camera are great.

Simple formula.
Buy the best condition that you can afford and whatever the model you will smile.

your poll should also take into account members that have had 2 (r170,r171)
or even all 3 generations

have R171 and Had R172

They both are nice and pleasant to drive

Comparing both cars

R172 is heavy and feels big. not agile enough. but power delivery is good, better interior.

R171 looks better than R172 IMO. Agile but wish it had more power and better transmission.

i end up keeping R171 and don't regret it.

I love the 171 SLK 55 of course. I've had a 171 300 SLK. & a 170 SLK 320 too. I'm not too crazy abou the front end of the 172's. IMHO?

Saw a green R171 inside an airport when they first came out and loved it. Bought a MB model car that looked great without knowing the model # and it turned out to be R171. Decided to look for newest R171 which in my country would have been the 2011 year and found one in great shape!! Very pleased.

loved the R170 but the R171 won me over on the R172

Used to have 2000 SLK 230 Kompressor Bahama Blue. Great car, fun to drive.

Considered the R172, but didn't like the front end look. Of course everyone has their own taste and opinion what does it for them. For me it had too much of a camaro/dodge look.

Current 2008 SLK 55 AMG Calcite White. Fantastic car, Thrill to drive, great looks. You know when you have a keeper when other people continue to give you comments about your ride. Like the racing look on the front.

I found the same thing with the E class looks. I used to own older versions E class car. Really liked the sporty look on the 2010 Version E class. When they changed it in 2014/2015, imho it lost its sporty look. Of course again all that is a matter of taste.

Final note: No matter what you drive R170 - R171 - R172 each time you set yourself behind the steering wheel and start the engine, as long as you feel your adrenaline flowing......isn't all that counts.. Happy cruising :tu:

Great comments.
It is surprising how many times manufacturers seem to go backwards with their styling.
Over time as one becomes accustomed, sometimes one grows to like them. I suspect that the R272 will fall into this category.
