hey hows it going everyone! I've never owned a Mercedes and just recently bought a 2001 slk320, the kicker though is it was in a flood and had water damage and must of fried some electric component because it wont start. I havent personally messed around with it yet but the guy i bought it from says he replaced some neutral switch under the break pedal, and that didnt do it and didnt want to keep throwing parts at it. He mentioned that when the key is in all the lights are on but when turns the key over he gets nothing like some switch is bad. Also mentioned that took the starter out and turned the key over and the starter engaged and spun but when put it back in the motor and turned it over the car wouldnt turn over. I know theres a bunch of possibilities, but wanted to ask some info or ideas of where to actually start and things to check from people with experience. Anything helps thank you!

do the car locks work with the remote or not with the remote?
if they do, you can probably rule out the pse being wet

but read the threads in the k40 link i posted

How old is the battery? battery must be great, not good

the battery and terminals looked good but was going to start diagnosing with a voltage load test on it first thing. Maybe even just buy a new one so i can rule out the battery right away because the guy i bought it from got it from an auction so really no telling how long the car has been sitting for. Do i need to get any specific battery? or would just a normal battery from autoparts store due? Also he said when he'd turn the key over he could hear the fuel pump and fan kick on. So if the k40 relay was bad would that mean these components wouldnt turn on?

Welcome from the Sacramento Valley SLK Enthusiasts!

Oh boy, I hope you got a great deal on the SLK! I see a money pit starting!, unless you are a mechanic familiar with Mercedes.

Heh - Be gentle with him! 0:)
@chevy1223 The best of luck with your efforts. I know you're fighting a battle there, but have you asked for the build details of your car? Post the VIN on the forum and one of the lovely Mods will look up your build details. That'll help when you have to go searching for part numbers.

Also - you may find some help in this section with knowing where to find parts and how to take parts apart.

It may also be worth starting a thread (or threads) in the R170 General Discussion Thread as you've now introduced yourself.

Welcome to the forum, by the way!

Hi and welcome to SLKWorld.com from the UK Midlands - Thanks for joining us and posting an intro! :)

Some great advice already from Jeff... and yes, the fan kicking in when turning ignition on is a common symptom of bad K40 (whether or not it was caused by flooding). Good luck!

Welcome from Wirral, England.

Read your intro and started reaching for the Prozac myself.
But any problem can be beaten.
Just a question of time and money and your limits to either.

You've got several good starting points but as it's flood damage and you've not mentioned these, I'll ask...

Have you checked the oil? Is it milky?
Water in the fuel line?
If you get a list of previous owners (some countries do this) and can figure the likely owner at the time
I'd try and find out how deep the car was submerged.

There's a R170 diy link in my signature below.

When you fancy meeting fellow members, or need local info there's a regional thread:

Good luck solving the issue.

I'll read the follow ups with interest.

hey guys its been a few days now but ill give you guys the run down. So I went to get the keys from the guy the next day after i bought it and brought some jumper cables to see if i could get the motor to turn over and it did make an attempt to crank so was supper excited and rushed to autozone and picked up a new battery and sure as **** the car fired right up! I drove it home 30 miles with no problems. Got home and turned it off and took the key out of the ignition and found the fog lights and marker lights were still on and the power locks didn't work. Did some research and checked the PSE pump and it still had water in it and terminals were corroded, so got a new one and hooked it up today and the locks worked and marker lights didnt stay on. Took the car for a little drive and when got back home and tried to use the power locks they didn't work but when i hit the lock button the fog lights and marker lights shut off this time. Could it be the k40 relay or maybe a fuse that shorted out and thats why it only worked once?
