You may not have an AMG

I believe if you haven't got one of these on your Engine, you haven't got an AMG, unless it was before 2003. The Sales people may have told you you have an AMG because its got an AMG branded Spoiler or Wheels but they are wrong.
The AMG brand looks like it is being diluted with nearly every Mercedes for Sale now days being an AMG.
Its all about the Engine.
If you had a White Ford Cortina with a Green Stripe it did not make it a Lotus Cortina, only if it had a Lotus Engine was it a Lotus Cortina.
A Red Kit car with a Ferrari badge is not a Ferrari.
Also if you had a Red Torino or any other Red car with a White Stripe you were not Starskey or Hutch.
I just thought I'd say.......

Agreed. the most important badge on an AMG is the crafters badge

Agreed. The BMW owners always have the same discussion over the M badge. Pretty sure Audi owners will over the S Line badge etc etc.

What

All very true...until, sadly, Mercedes decided to enter the posing game, too.
See discussion in this thread:
http://www.slkworld.com/2514313-post6.html

Hang on to the the 32's and 55's, gang.

Lets get one thing straight, Mercedes decides to add the AMG package who are you to say other wise? If a person who owns a Mercedes and decides to put an AMG badge on the truck who cares?? It's his or her car not yours and he or she has the right to add or stick anything they want on it.
LOL your an idiot for saying that Mercedes has joined the posing game.
Grow the heck up people This is suppose to be a place where people can go and discuss things and share their stories, pictures of their cars, problem solving .. etc. not a place where you can make fun of people.

Surprised you haven't had your knuckles wrapped yet with that statement....I'll give it 24 hours before someone one this forum disagrees with you and tells you that the newly acclaimed C 45O,C43 and SLC 43 are true AMG's and the 'One Man, One Engine' philosophy is a thing of the past: its now about 'Driving Performance'

I had a look at buying a new SLK last year. Was gobsmacked to see nearly every model had an AMG version.
Even more shocked to find I could have a brand new 200 bluethingy AMG for a mere £26K, with extra goodies.

After a bit of homework on here I discovered the truth.
AMG badges galore, uprated shocks and such, but not an AMG engine.

Why MB didn't go for 'sports' or 'gt' to add the upgrades, lord only knows.

So as my SLK32 hasn't got the "handcrafted by" badge on it... ;)
Mine is also a 2002, and I don't have the plaque either. I've always thought that these engines were also 'one man one build', it was just that AMG didn't record by whom.
I believe I have a 'proper' AMG

As I said, "Just saying"
I understand where Mercedes are going, they want to keep the price of their cars as high as possible so put a Premium Brand like AMG on their Premium Brand Cars and Hey Presto + £10,000.
Mercedes AMG A45 vs Ford Focus RS, the Mercedes is around £10,000 more:surprise: I must admit I don't now all there is to know about these Cars but they don't look much different to me.

"... not a place where you can make fun of people."
And you just called a member an idiot.
Nice.

AMG spent decades selling the hand-built "one man, one engine" aspect of the true AMG. The level of dissatisfaction expressed over on the AMG Private Lounge by many long-term AMG owners with their decision to grow market share at the expense of brand dilution is pretty loud.

But if plastic bits and a badge do it for you, go for it.

SO my wife's 02 SLK 32 AMG, sold to us used, with a title and registration that says SLK 32 AMG doesn't qualify if it doesn't have that plaque?

Hers doesn't. But the engine itself does say AMG on it.

So I guess that doesn't qualify. Title and engine.

Not ALL AMG's got that plaque. Though to be honest, there is one sticker on the inside of the front windshield that does say that with a signature on it.

From what I was told by AMG, they did not keep records of who built each engine for model year 2002.
I think 03 up started having them.

should have put that in the 'poser' section Daniel

Yes, AMG's great cars, but I'm sorry to say the way the 'valve cover gaskets leak' (R171 55 AMG to my knowledge) I'm beginning to wonder if "AMG" doesn't stand for: "Atrociously Made Gaskets" According to my service invoice - mine were replaced just under 3,000 miles ago by an MB main dealer and they're leaking again, lol....A nyone M anage G luing their covers to stop the leaks? >:D

#23 ·
3000 miles ago isn't much, out of the years guarantee on work? I might complain and see if they redo it even if it is. Surely not done properly?

#21 ·
wahhhh :D I had mine replaced 3 times Small price to pay for all those s(miles)! :D

I must admit that I forgot about that one: A bsolute M arvelous G rin-factor

AMG to be or not to be

I suppose that AMG has to pay for Lewis and Nico's retirement plans somehow. I agree completely that without the AMG engine it is NOT an AMG. It is about the power and performance people. I am not that happy about the brand confusion that badging the sports package with AMG or the other models may water down the brand. But like the SLK32, not all AMG's have the little engine plaque. My first AMG was the C36. It was one of 1000 vehicles made worldwide. As I recall, it had no cute engine plaque but the valve cover and the car, seats and steering wheel, etc were all amply marked with the AMG logo. There was no doubt when you floored it. Truth is the C36 handled better than any later model AMG that I have driven or owned. It had that magical quality where the outside rear corner would squat into the corner and just bite. It was slightly prone to oversteer in ways that most corporate attorneys do not have the cajones to allow these days. The newer cars have more power and sound great but that little C36 is still the gold standard for me.

When I think of AMG, I think of big brakes, big power, big torque, and stiffer, more controlled suspension that is stiff enough for the track but compliant enough for smooth autobahn as well as well composed on alpine passes, etc. Cute wheels or trunk spoilers are just so much window dressing and frankly, I would be embarrassed to drive a car so adorned without the big engine under the hood to back up the flash on the trunk. Just my opinion lads. To each his own. I am amazed that MB actually can sell that **** but if it makes the owner smile, so be it.

I can say this. My SLK55 makes me smile every time I drive it. >:D

Well, AMG IS Mercedes for a long time now, and if Mercedes uses AMG on a car without the optional engine, it IS AMG, they made it, they name it.
And from the SLKs I looked at, I was looking for one with the AMG package on a 350, it is more than spoiler and wheels, it is ride height, suspension spring rates, damping, and also the M mode on the shifter and the paddle shifters, in addition to the styling/wheel add ons.
That is how I look at it now, I never knew that there were AMG variants without the high power engine until I started looking for the SLK. When I first saw AMG body panels on a SLK350, I thought it was a personal add on deal, then I learned more and found out it was a factory option and all it included.

Recall seeing a few posts on the AMG Private Lounge site where some owners of AMGs made before they started badging were able to obtain their engine builder's name from AMG by providing their VIN. They were then able to purchase the correct engine plaque from a local Benz dealer. Might be worth a shot for those who would like to have one.

They are usually responsive to e-mail:
amg-privatelounge@daimler.com

....might help to register and join the PL first, though (and absolute confirmation that you have a true AMG).

Thanks for this info AMG-UFO. They did indeed keep records prior to 2002, and after exchanging a few emails with them it seems my AMG Master Mechanic is Timo Brill.
I'm not yet sure wether to buy and mount a plaque on my engine, but it is good to know who is responsible for this fine piece of work :burnout:

TFP,

THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT MY WIFE'S ENGINE BAY LOOKS LIKE. Only difference is her car is the classic silver. Other than that, it's exactly the same. Though she put the K&N sticker on the filter box.

No. no other models had a hand made engine nameplate because only the AMG were hand made.
