Well, the '98 SLK drove like a dream into its new home in Augusta. The appearance of the car, its handling and performance were better than expected, especially for the amount of money that was paid for it.
The fun ended while trying to remove the key. Apparently it has tumbler issues. After registering the car at the DMV next Monday, an order will be placed at the Mercedes dealership for a tumbler that's set to original specs (about $80). The labor cost ($280.23) they quoted me for replacing it was bad enough but a line in the sand was drawn when they told me how much a replacement fob cost and that they were the only source for the 1998 model.
The plan now is to research the resources in this forum for a better fob deal and hopefully, the instructions for replacing the tumbler are here as well.
