So I am loving my 320 so far except for one thing, of course: The coffee cup problem. I've seen several threads that have options for a holder but I would like to go the other way and find a cup that fits the existing holder.
Then the other day I happen to buy a 20oz bottle of Smart Water and just for some place to put it, I popped it in the cup holder. Amazing! It is a perfect fit. No wobble, no lean despite my best cornering efforts. This got me thinking about the perfect cup...
Did you measure out the smart water bottle and compare to these two options from Amazon? I too have a slk320 (mine has manual transmission). I feel uneasy having any cups (or bottle) with liquid sitting over my electronics (radio, hazard button etc). Even a sweating bottle gets me nervous. I have opted (at least for now) to purchase a cup holder wedge (made by BELL), got it at Autozone. It fits nicely between the center console and passenger seat (when no one is riding with me). I didn't want to get something to attach to the floor. The XL Dunkin coffee has a little wobble (I do take precautions when taking turns and starting from a standstill) the cup sits right next to the shifter. Will look into stopping the wobble, maybe a cozzy? some sort of insert? Who knows? If you decide to buy, let me know how it works out.
I did measure the Smart Water bottle and it is 2.7 inches, so if the specs on Amazon are correct, either of these should work. Guess I'm just going to have to order one and find out...
I agree. That's why I looked long and hard until I found the Camelbak.
There is no way that it will ever spill/leak. I'm fanatical about keeping my car clean :nerd:
I am interested to know what kind of drinks you can fit in the cup holders.
I currently have the tray, and am trying to solve the "cup holder" problem! I have a couple of after market solutions on order, but wondered what the issues are with the official R170 holder (I've looked into ordering one). Does it take e.g. a McDonald's Coca-Cola drink? A standard take away style coffee? Bottle of water (less important as it seals)? Can? Just intrigued as to what fits and what doesn't. I've already considered the possible spilage issue. I drive a manual so I believe that to be less of a potential issue than the autos due to lack of electronics in that general area - or am I mistaken?
I don't drink a lot on the move but it'd help me to sleep at night knowing I've got that cup holder problem taken care of
Hello RussT, I also have a 2001 slk320 manual. I believe the original idea of the cup holder was to hold an 8 - 12 oz coffee cup back in the early 2000's. I am concerned about the weight of a drink in the holder. I already see a slight crack near the base of the holder (was there before my purchase of the car at the beginning of this year). I actually purchased a cup holder wedge that I can use (when no passenger is in the car) that is between the passenger seat and center console. It has worked for me for now.
Even with a manual transmission, you still have radio, hazard, seat heater buttons below.
I have read a lot about this "wedge", unfortunately it doesn't seem to be available in the UK. If my other potential solutions don't work, I may order one to be delivered to my friend in the USA ready for my next trip in December
RussT - Available at cargogear.com and autozone (also ebay from autozone). Next time you are in the U.S., just pop into an autozone.
