Things to do in North Florida?

We're planning our escape from the likely miserable weather in the UK next February and Florida is our first choice. We've done Miami and Key West in the past so are keen to explore the north. I'd definitely like to visit the Space Centre but wondered what else is worth a look. Not really interested in the Disney type attractions, more wildlife or natural beauty.
We plan to spend about three weeks so there should be plenty of time to see lots.
Is it worth hiring a camper van or best to just get a car and stay in hotels or perhaps rent an apartment and travel out from there?
Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Most visitors come and see Simplyslk in Lakeland. A site to see for sure! :D

I would rent a car and stay in B&B's or hotels. I'll compile a list of links with some nice places to see. The natural beauty of Florida is amazing. We would enjoy a short meet for coffee/drinks when you're here!

I'd be washing his 'baby' from now to kingdom come!

He can rent an slk. Ask Chicky where she got hers from when she came down to Floriduh
The website:

Mercedes Car Rental*

Chicky's comment:

I thought in Florida you get your SLK with a gun in hand from the previous owner, hoping they don't produce a bigger gun.
LOL it's not THAT bad, yet, but wherever I go my Sig is with me at all times!

That list would be great, many thanks.
Also, more than happy to meet up for a beer or two!

The space center is definitely worth it, especially now that the shuttle is there on display.
That's more "central Florida" to us locals, though.

If you're into any shopping, Orlando's outlet malls are a big attraction to tourists. And if you miss being so close to Sweeden while you're over here, there's an IKEA there as well. :)

St. Augustine is a nice town to go and walk around - it's historic and has a lighthouse, some old forts, etc. Good restaurants and such. There's also a pirate ship there for some reason... I forget why.

If you're into nature, you may want to check out the Ocala National Forest and do some camping there. I'm sure you can rent camping tents and supplies somewhere and make a few days out of it.

Other than that, I would drive up the coastline and find a vacation rental on the beach for a week - that may be fun. Look at Ormond Beach and Ormond by the Sea if you plan on going that route.

Just rambling off the top of my head, I hope this helps.

I may just ask you the same when I visit England for the first time (hopefully this summer)

When in Orlando and want to meet the 2 world famous moderators from SLKworld.com, and willing to travel maybe 30 mins west towards Lakeland, send a pm to simplyslk!

Hi All,
Many thanks for all your suggestions - we'll try and visit as many as possible (though Cleveland might be a tad too far).
I think our trip is just about all booked now and we're really looking forward to it!
We're arriving in Orlando on the 5 Feb and staying for 4 nights, then off to St Petersburg for 3, WeekiWachi for another 3, then to Daytona for a week with some Canadian friends who are escaping the Montreal winter - and just in time for the big race.
From Daytona we drive to Pensacola for 5 days and then back via Tallahassee to Orlando for flight home on the 5 March.
I couldn't rent an SLK so have to make do with a Mustang convertible.
This retirement malarkey is hard work but, hey, someone has to do it...

Well as you head west from Orlando on I4, you pass by Lakeland where Simplyslk lives, so stop by for some ice teas and I will meet you there!

Mustang!? I eat Mustangs! Yummy!!
