So I'm throwing around Cyberdrakon's idea about having a regular drive the 2nd Saturday of every even month.

BUT DUE TO POPULAR DEMAND, IT WILL BE SUNDAY JUNE 13TH.

This doesn't mean we can't meet in between, but that this schedule would be fixed (except for rain of course). Does this sound like a good idea?

I figured we could start scheming or shenanigans early... R)
So far, we're leaning towards Durkatlon's idea:

The meeting point would be the North County Fair shopping mall in south Escondido: http://westfield.com/northcounty/

The pic below shows a general area to meet at the North County Shopping Center. There's two two gas stations (Chevron and Shell) across the street from the parking area. It's best to fill up the tanks before meeting in the parking area.

No can do on this date. Son is graduating :) ceremonies on this date June 12th).

I'm up for any socal drive location (as long as it is paved road). June 12th works for me, but I dont mind if we make an exception on the date so we don't lose the "Grad Dad" crowd.

June 13th, Sunday, I may be free. This also allows slkluv to join us as he's busy on Sundays; however, if June 12th works for most people, then by all means. I'll catch y'all on the next one.

Had a glorious solo-drive today which could be a starting point for a possible San Diego area meet in June.

Started off in Santee where I live, then took 67 north, then 78 almost to Julian. Instead of going through Julian I took Wynola Rd which is a LOT like Tuna Canyon: totally quiet, narrow, twisty like you wouldn't believe. It's not one-way, but the only opposing traffic was sport bikes there for the same thing I was there for.

I went down to Anza Borrego, up the Yaqui Pass to Borrego Springs, had coffee, then up toward Palomar Mountain. I didn't have time to do Palomar Mountain itself today. Ran into a large (40+ cars?) Porsche meet that was running Palomar. Pretty sure it was these guys:

The Palomar run would be sweet, but not as cool as Wynola for just balls-to-the-wall fun driving.

Here's a google map of the route I took today. Just something to start mulling over.
(Edit: fixed final waypoints)

Google says 4 hours for this, but it took me less than that including my coffee stop, and closing the loop by driving back home. This would be a good run for a Sunday and starting not too late in the morning. The thing with Sunday is that most people with toy-haulers that go to the desert start heading home, so the trip into the desert is deserted. The road back out though will be riddled with slow people with toy-haulers although these folks are mostly very gracious in terms of making room for faster cars to pass.

All in all a great little trip!

(Edit2: a more realistic route for the actual meet, which doesn't involve coming all the way to Santee, and which has the Palomar loop)

I am cool with the route. We could meet around 9:45-10am, and allow 4 hours for the meet-drive-lunch-drive and perhaps head home around 2-3pm.

Would be interested to know what the others think.

Easily. I assume this would be mostly a driving meet again like the last one. We definitely need a stop in Borrego Springs for lunch, and I'm sure a few shorter ones along the way for pictures. But the nominal driving time is a good deal shorter than 4 hrs I'm sure. :burnout::burnout::burnout:

We could even skip Palomar altogether this time, and do that at a future meet. Since Palomar would be about the last interesting thing we'd do, we can decide to take it or leave it right then and there as time permits.

I would propose the waypoint for everyone to meet prior to the drive is North County Fair shopping mall in south Escondido (note: not included on my loop map: from the mall it's just a few miles to get on the loop). Additional waypoints to be planned depending on attendance.

I'm still in research (dreaming) mode as we are putting all our energy and money into a new business venture. So I won't be able to buy an SLK until about a year from now. But that doesn't stop me from wanting one - and wanting to at least get a ride and a feel. Is there anyone who might be willing to let me into the co-pilot's seat? And it just happens that North County Fair is literally a mile from my house. I promise I'll bring all the beer from our amazing local brewery, Stone.

I wouldn't mind having you drive along in mine (a 350). I'm pretty sure there'll be a willing 55 owner as well so you could feel/hear the different engines from up close. I hope you don't get too nauseous from driving the twisties in the passenger seat, or I may have to borrow one of Eddy's barf-bags. :biglaugh:

What route are the members from SG Valley, Santa Monica et al taking to the final waypoint: Westfield North County Shopping Center, 272 East Via Rancho Parkway, Escondido CA 92025 ? Are you guys taking the 15 south via 91 or the 10?

Anyone want to meet at the El Toro Y junction (say near Spectrum 21) and then head south on the 5 and then 78 east to the above waypoint? Travel time is about 70 minutes from the parking lot across the TacoBell HQ (also near Ford PAG) as shown in the google map link.

Since the date and times are set, I put together some options on the route discussed and added for the finish line - Stone Brewery, love their beer.

Meet Sunday, June 13

For LA/OC folks, meet at the parking lot across from Ford PPG on Gateway - 8:30 - 8:45 AM
North of Gateway and Alton Pkwy Intersection

Meet at Westfield North County Shopping Center - 9:45 - 10:00 AM
272 East Via Rancho Parkway, Escondido CA 92025

Head to Pablito's Mexican Bar & Grill in Borrego Springs for lunch
590 Palm Canyon Drive, Borrego Springs, CA 92004

Maybe end up at Stone Brewery for beer
1999 Citracado Parkway, Escondido, CA 92029

4.0 hrs, 144 miles Borrego Springs + Mt Palomar

Mind if I cross post at the AMG PL?
Absolutely fine. Go for it! I also exchanged messages with a San Diego C63 AMG owner on benzworld (DuaneC63) who also said he'd be coming.

For this run my preference would be to have Borrego Springs in there, so we can also do the amazing downhill Banner Grade Road (right after Wynola Rd). We can take or leave Palomar based on people's interest after the long drive up until that point.

On lunch, I had originally figured we'd do that in Borrego Springs itself, so it kind of cuts the driving into two about equal stretches. If people prefer to keep on going back to Escondido and do (late-)lunch+drinks at Stone, that would certainly be fine with me.

Alternatively we can do lunch in Borrego and then go for beers afterwards at the Stone Brewery. That last option would probably be a bit easier on people that prefer to head back home afterwards. At least they'll've had lunch by then! :tu:

If anyone wants to caravan from the Pasadena/San Gabriel valley area let me know so we can set up a previous meeting point (V8SLK, Cyberdrakon?).

Don't wait for me, but I'd love to make it! My wife is ready to burst with our first-born baby, a daughter due July 6th. Sunday is our one "free" day, so if she's got the energy for it, we're in. I'll try to remember to check this thread on the 12th to confirm or delete my name :)
