Hello everyone. It is a pleasure to read through this website, with such an incredible amount of information available.

For my sixtieth birthday I purchased a used 280 slk, in Iridium Silver. It's a very clean California car, which will be shocked by Chicago weather. I intend to keep it garaged during the nasty parts of the winter.

I have not mastered the search function too well, and I was wondering if anyone had experience with the plexiglas windscreen? Is it easy to install, and remove? Does it provide more or less noise than the mesh screen? And finally, who should I buy it from -- my dealer wants $799 for it, which is more than some other sources.

Thanks!

Welcome Michael Burke.

The OEM Lexan rear windscreen is easy to install: the 2 triangles insert unto the hoops behind the headrest; they are inserted via the rear of the vehicle and NOT from the cabin side; the smooth part facing the rear of the vehicle and the button facing the cockpit. The Lexan windscreen is then inserted from the top in a sliding motion and you will hear 2 clicks as it engages.

You may be able to get the OEM windscreen probably cheaper via SLKstore.com (see top row menu above). Occasionally you may see it on sale from MB dealers in Germany on ebay.

Welcome!

I too am formally from Naper-Thrill! 23W255 Kimberwick Lane...

Congrats on the car, Michael. Actually, it think the SLK would fair well in Chicago's winters... If you did not have to be on the road with everyone else, especially the SUV's without mudflaps shooting up the salt. But it is nice to keep it clean in the garage!

If you do take it out in the winter, I recommend visiting the Route 53 touchless car wash on Route 53 in Lisle. They have an excellent clean water underbody wash.

Now, how's about a picture of you and the car with Buckingham Fountain in the background?

Congratulations.

This is such a fun and enjoyable car. I know you will love it and enjoy taking care of it.

The wind screens are nice. I haven't bought one myself yet as I have the cheap cloth one, and sometimes to feel even more open, I just go ahead and use nothing at all.

If cash is tight now, I'd say you can still enjoy the car without it a while.

Has your car arrived yet ?
