Hello,
I’m new to forum and I did join this one due to my husband and I having issues with our 2001 Mercedes SLK230.
This is what happened:
I was in the car with the engine running window down listening to music while I was smoking a cigarette. It was cold out so I turned on the heater. It smelled funny so I immediately turned it off (never used the heater in this car before, I hardly ever drove this car, my husband did).
I turned off the car including the radio and just had the window down for awhile playing games on my phone. After a few, I started to get cold again so I was going to turn the heater on for a min so I could get a little warm. The car would not start! I have had starter go out in cars before and there is a clicking sound when that happens but this did not do anything, it was acting like something was preventing it from starting.
My husband and I looked up if I could have accidentally activated a kill sequence but we could not find anything. Tried jumping it to see if that was the issue but that did not work either!
We finally towed the car to the dealership and found out that there is some sequence that they can get the car to start but it will only start two times and then same thing.
The dealership ran a diagnostic on it and came up with the RCL Control Unit needed to be replaced.
After looking this up it has to do with the car key and Remote Control Locking Control Unit.
After looking this up I found that a lot of people were saying to clean the key because the dirt inside of the remote could be causing the issue. My husband and I tried that also with No luck.
Any suggestions? I really do not understand what the RCL Control Unit is, is it a anti theft thing? Is it part of the motor/starter?
I really do not understand how the car could work and not have this issue for like a year after we bought it and then all the sudden it won’t start.
I can not remember if the accessories will come on or not but I am thinking they will (because I had the window down and was able to put it up even though it wouldn’t start), but nothing attempts to start when the key is turned.
Did I activate some sort of anti theft mechanism by mistake? Is there anything I should try before buying a RCL Control Unit?
Fuses? I have seen online people talk about fuses in the trunk but I have no idea where!
What does this RCL Control Unit look like and where is it located? I only found that RCL was Remote Control Locking Unit due to some Manual stating abbreviations at the end but nothing really talked about what it was or where it was located or any tips on how to fix it.
Please Help
