Hello SLKWorld.com - new Member
I am a new member and want to say "Hello." I am a relatively new owner of a 1999 Mercedes-Benz SLK230 Kompressor. It's Metallic Bahama Blue. My plan is for it to be a "fun car" for me to drive in the summer on the weekends and on some vacations. I live in the northern U.S., so it will only be driven 6 months out of the year and stored the other 6 months. I've wanted a MB roadster since I was sixteen, and I recently celebrated a landmark birthday. This one came my way so the timing seemed right. I had it inspected at my local MB dealer, and it checked out with no major issues. I knew it needed some interior work (flaking paint on the console and a few other items). I was really excited about driving it this summer.
However... after driving it just a few times, the top would no longer go down. I just found out from a local MB private mechanic that it needs two hydraulic pumps replaced for the top to operate again. I'm also having some issues with my headlights now as they are pointing down and cannot be adjusted up as the existing harness will not allow for that. Currently, I cannot use them effectively except on high beam (bright). Therefore, the headlights need to be replaced too. I've looked at Spyder Halogen brand with the halo lights or simply replacing with the same 1999 style halogen head lights that it has now. What are the thoughts out there from other members on headlights? Are there other options? What do other members feel about keeping it as it was in 1999 verses upgrading the look of the headlights?
I am definitely not a mechanic, and I attempt only very basic things which I know I can handle. Not much really beyond detailing my own vehicles, because I enjoy it. I have a passion for cars. I grew up with corvettes (much different, I know), which my family still has a few even today. I spent a lot of time with car clubs, road rally, and at various other car events growing up. Which I was wondering, is there anything like that for MB SLK owners? By the way, I also currently have a BMW 328i XDrive, and I also really enjoy driving it. Thank you in advance, looking forward to the forum.
