Hi! I’m Peter

Hello, everyone

I'm glad to join this forum, I found a lot of useful information here.
Last year I bought an R172 250 CDI AMG Sport. I thought it was a good choice for a comfortable convertible that both myself and my girlfriend can drive. I never thought it would be more than a toy, but it turned out to be all the car we needed; bought the 'Roadster' branded custom fitted luggage, and we almost never struggled for storage space on our weekend getaway trips. After almost a year of ownership, I absolutely love it.

Lately I have been thinking about upgrading to a R172 55 AMG; I've always wanted to drive a NA V8 engine. This is the part where I may need some help from you guys.
I have test driven the 55 AMG for about half an hour, and I have some mixed feelings about it:
- In comfort mode at low speeds it feels more sluggish than the 250 CDI
- Brakes are amazing! Much better stopping power than the 250 CDI (even with the Sport Pack!)
- Engine and exhaust noise is quite different from the M157 engine (think CLS 63 AMG), although the M152 is derived from the M157
- Brutal over 4,000 rpm - love the upshift/downshift noises
- In comfort mode, cruising around 40-50mph you get this exhaust note that I may find tiring after a while
I guess I'm struggling to figure out if the 55 AMG is twice the car the 250 CDI is - because it costs twice as much; not just initial purchase but also running costs.
And for the 55 AMG owners: where do you get to drive the car to its potential? Do you do track days? - If so, how does the car take it? I am considering tracking the car if I decide to buy one.

Do I need a more powerful, faster car? My inner child screams "of course I do, what a silly question!" But realistically speaking, when would I ever benefit from all that horsepower and speed?

Anyway, that's my introduction, this is why I'm here.

Until next time, drive safe!

Welcome from Gloucester uk

Take one for a longer test drive on some decent country roads then you can get to really play.
They do sound different to the 63s I’m afraid but to me they sound great.
I’ve never noticed any drone from the exhaust when cruising?
C mode is for motorways and long trips S or M is for fun and noise

Welcome Peter, I’ve driven the 250 diesel and thought it wasn’t too bad, lacking in the braking department as you noted but also I thought it rolled too much into tight corners even at relatively slow speeds. I think your perception of sluggishness is to do with the high torque available from the diesel available from the get go. The 55 needs a little more encouragement being a petrol. Regarding the exhaust note cruising at 50/60 mph was that in ‘C’ or ‘S’ mode? When the car is in ‘C’ with ECO on and it drops into 4 cylinder operation the exhaust note is slightly odd, perhaps this is what you are referring to?
Best economy I’ve had from mine on a run was 33mpg, great for this car but not going to seem great after your diesel economy. It’s one of those heart over head type decisions which one is right for you really!

I’ve tracked my car just twice and it was a hoot! The car handled it very well and got a little hot but not excessively so after 8 laps or so of use. Bottom line is, these cars can definitely stand up to track use without any modifications. It is possible to enjoy the power in every day driving when the conditions allow. It makes overtaking very assured and fast when you want to press on a bit.

Good luck with your decision, what ever you decide.

My inner child did the same to me (I will be 80 next year) so I went and traded in a perfectly good 2007 BMW Z4 roadster with very low miles and in perfect condition on a 2006 BMW M6 coupe with a 507HP V-10 and SMG transmission. Stupidest thing I will ever admit to. I briefly took it to 100 KMh over the posted limit and noted that I was about at half throttle and then sold it. My almost 19 year old SLK230 is not much faster than my one year old Honda Civic 1.5L Turbo with CVT, but it handles quite like my Miata MX-5, so it is still quite enjoyable.

Welcome from America's oldest city...enjoy the ride!
I've got an SLK350 (2012), and have often thought of an AMG like Jeffs...but then decide I'll just make do and cruise down the back roads. So again, enjoy!
