SLK number plate

Hi

I have recently purchased an SLK 350 with the number plate S122 SLK. Any idea why it was registered with that number plate. Looking at the V5C it looks as though it has always had that number plate since it was first registered in 2005.

Your car, when new, would have been first registered as an 05 or a 55 plate. That's official. THEN, after that initial registration, any registration number can be supplanted in it's place, as long as it comes from a source that is older that a 2005 Yr registration. That's what's happened with your car. Your current registration number dates from between 1st of August 1998 and the 28th of February 1999. The fee for the DVLA to transfer a registration number is only £80. I would say that your registration number is worth £800 - £1000, because it has 7 characters, but that is just my opinion. You can search on the Internet to see what other "SLK" plates are valued at.

Welcome to SLKWorld.com from Northern
California

Please update your location and vehicle (Put Looking!)(year?: 1996-2017,
model?: 32, 200, 230, 250, 280, 300,320,350,55) in your profile as it helps the members
answer your questions which usually are based on that information if you haven’t. This takes about
30 seconds to do.
Follow exactly to update: ‘Usercp’ at the top of page, then ‘edit your details’ on the left side,
‘additional information’ near the bottom, edit your ‘location’ and ‘vehicle’. Info in your garage does
not update your profile.

PARTS Information on Mercedes SLK R170 R171 R172 >https://slk-links.neocities.org/

You will never need to ask about part numbers again.

Some tips to make your visit here more enjoyable:
If you haven’t, please use the 'search' feature at the top right of the page for your questions as they
have probably been asked before. Remember, ‘Search’ is your friend.
If you wish to become PM (Private Message) capable or to ‘edit’, you need 15 posts. To get those 15
posts quickly, just go to the ‘New members introduce yourself here’ section and welcome enough
new members to obtain your needed posts to PM/edit. You can always pm a moderator.
Want to post a picture? Start a new thread or make a post, click ‘edit’, click on the ‘paper clip’ or
‘advanced’ and/or ‘manage attachments’ then ‘choose file’ then ‘upload’ and ‘submit’! If Iphone
pics, you need to rename any additional pics as Iphone names its pics all the same, image.jpg.
Want to ‘like’ or thank’ someone’s comments? Use the ‘like’ button to the right or the ‘Thanks’
button, bottom right of any post you like. This saves you having to comment.
New members should be aware that the 'New Posts' link next to the 'Search' link top right of the
info bar is a great way to see all of the posts you have missed since you were on the forum last.
Remember to click 'mark forums read' under ‘quick links’ when you leave.

How do you know that it has 'always had that plate'?

Not disputing what you say but 'S' denotes 1998? as far as I know so I would say that it is a 'personal Number' 'private plate' or whatever you call them???

Welcome from Gloucester UK
As already stated, the registration can be replaced with a personal plate before the car even hits the road for the first time.
That is why it had looked like it has been on from new.
The original owner had the right to keep the number but obviously left it with the car as it is more car model related than someone’s name.
As soon as the car was sold the number became the property of the new owner.

Welcome from North Hampshire

As @Mugs stated, if You purchase a brand new car, a DVLA "Select Number plate" can be allocated to a brand new car from day one, as I did on My Renault Laguna, way back in 1996....!!

You just purchase the "Select Number Plate" from the DVLA website and give the car dealer the V750 document to register the new vehicle.

Not entirely true - the car could have been first registered with S122 SLK and never had an 05/55 plate - as long as the original first owner had S122 SLK on retention the car can be first registered with that number.

If you take the SLK number plate off of the car it will receive an '05' registration. Think that even when you buy a new car and give the dealer a personal plate it first receives an age correct plate that is then replaced with the personal plate. When taking off the personal plate it reverts to the original plate. Causes a little confusion to MB for a while when a personal plate is put on.

Again not entirely true - when you buy a new car you can put whatever plate you have the retention for on it and it will then never have a 05/55 plate on it as said above.

However, you are correct, in that if you remove the personal plate it will get an 05/55 plate. If it had one originally, it will usually get that number back (it may have been assigned elsewhere...) or a new number will be assigned.

I have done this a number of times as I have a few personal plates that I have moved to both new and second hand cars.

Carzana used to give you number plate history for free (so would show plate swaps and the original number) but unfortunately you now have to pay for this.
