First time Mercedes-Benz owner, so I don't even know - is it OK to call it a Benz? A Mercedes? Is it bad form to abbreviate to MB? These are important things to know joining a new community!
In any case, I come to the world of German engineering (well, I am personally a product of German bio-engineering, but that's different) after deciding it was time to retire, or at least garage-and-restore, my first new car, the '00 Mustang GT 'vert I bought 18 summers ago. The nickel-and-dime phase had progressed through quarter-and-dollar and was now well into the 'Hamilton-and-Jackson' stage. ($10-$20 for those not up on American currency...)
Having previously owned a turbocharged '89 Ford Probe GT (essentially a Mazda MX-6 if unfamiliar) and since a new roaring V8 Mustang GT 'vert is not in the financial budget until at least 2021 (er, if ever, no stock options this time around...) I decided to look back to the world of foreign, forced-induction, single-clutch manual transmissions - and of course, had to be another convertible. I wasted 12 years of my life driving non-convertibles before I drove my first, and refuse to ever do so again!
Given those absolute requirements there were still lots of choices, but when I found Frau Kompressor with a $4000 price tag on a lot surrounded by new cars anywhere from 20 to 30 times that price, I figured there had to be SOME reason the dealership held onto it....right? (The next used Mercedes on the lot was itself 8x that.....
That, and I remember back in 2000 when buying the Mustang, I remember seeing a few of these tooling around the area and thinking, "Hmm, someday?"
Now, no offense to anyone (it's because I'm lazy about cleaning, that's all!) but I SWORE about 30 years ago I would never drive a white car, and have repeated that a few times over the years - but maybe a decade ago began to add the corollary, "...unless it's a Jaguar or a Mercedes." (Dad owned a white Jag at the time.)
And, well, here I am!
So, I found the forum here mainly while searching out insights into the interesting nature of the 'not always enabled supercharger' because prior to buying Frau Kompressor I was not aware such things existed. Roots or centrifugal, my limited experience of the supercharger is it's bolted on, belted up and always there.
I am still trying to figure out if mine is really working correctly, as using a bluetooth OBD-II adapter and the Torque app, I cannot make sense of the readings for Intake Manifold Pressure and Vacuum/Boost. So, expect that post from me soon with details if I can't find the answer soon.
For an old gal, Frau Kompressor is remarkably well kept - the red SRS light is on, but I repaired that in my own highly skilled way (1 cm square black tape) and the headliner is drooping (which I will fix correctly soon) but so far, that's all I've noticed anywhere inside or out.
Thanks for having me, I suspect nobody read this far but I'm a talker by nature and profession and a forum poster since the 1980's so.....yeah. I talk and type quite a lot.
(Anyone want to take a shot at what my last name is? "Fensty" being the nickname any American boy with this last name is inevitably given.......)
