My 'new to me' 2005 SLK 55 AMG
I owned a 1999 SLK 230 that was a rescue project from an O'Hare Airport auction in '08. Wrenched that car myself--bi-valve, turn signal stem, brakes, vario roof and some body rust spots. Traded it in on a GLK 350---which WAS the greatest vehicle I had ever owned until I picked up my SLK55 AMG on Friday morning in Chicago.
It was raining, so the first 120 miles out of Chicago was top down---drafted a Suburau WRX on 90 east doing 135 mph, solid, nimble, purred like kitty; a kitty with a full throated, four exhausted V8 in its throat!
50 miles stop and go through the west burbs of Chicago, interstate for about 85 miles, then 120 miles of two lane highway through many small towns. My gas mileage was 24.1 mpg on the trip. (Topped tank with 93 octane after left dealership). Top down for 80 miles of that trip. Highway speeds of 80 mph, two lane highway averages 48 mph, stop and go 32 mph.
No rust, new front pads and rotors, new seat leather on driver side bottom seat, new motor mounts, rims gloss powder coated.
Stiff suspension, which I expect. It IS an AMG after all! But I get a side to side shimmy/shake when hitting bumps/crappy road. Rear right tire that is nearly flat in the middle tread from burn outs/it kicks to the left when hard accelerating from stop.
Why did I wait 6 years to get another road rocket? You CANNOT FEEL BAD with the top down on a Mercedes roadster. I live in the Mid West USA, think cold winters, convertible weather is only from May-September, but have always driven my SLK 230 year round, top down when conditions are over 20 degrees! Heated seats, neck scarf heater and HI heat, side windows up, toasty!
