First off, hi guys and girls.
I've just picked up my first SLK last night, a 1997 SLK 200 R170. I'd been looking for different SLK's for a while. Originally was leaning towards a 230K which was a little younger.
Eventually, injuries sustained while riding my road/racing bicycle in France (had my bicycle slide out from under me, after which I slid about 8 meters on asphalt and some meters over rocks, MASSIVE road rash) had me fast-track my quest for a car as the injury has made sure I can't comfortably ride my motorcycle ('04 Hayabusa, delim/PCV). I found this particular one online, made a call and picked it up the same night.
My SLK 200 R170
is matte black (originally yellow), with black AMG rims and black interior. The matte black is definitely a hate-it-or-love-it color. I figured it's a convenience, since rust often takes the SLK's by storm at the wheelwells, which has been (at least partially) solved or at least delayed by some time.
There's a few things I'm going to be working on. The roof will not retract (flashing button) and the driver side power window will not go down. There's also a loud rattle when accelerating at low RPM, which I figure is either a stabiliser or maybe the parcel shelf, I'll figure that out later.
I'm a self-taught "tinkerer". I've owned a '99 Cadillac Seville SLS on which I've done a complete engine rebuild (HELL, do not recommend that with the Northstar engine), owned a '94 Pontiac Firebird (my first car) with which I've tinkered more along the lines of replacing the radio, removing the catalytic converter etc. and alongside I've worked on my cousin's '92 Mazda Miata. I've owned a few other cars but no notable "tinkery/mechanic work" cars.
Plan of attack
- Driver side window not lowering
The passenger side works fine. When the window is up, and I hit the switch to raise the window, I hear a click from what I figure is the actuator. No such click from the driver side one. Conclusion: either the switch or the actuator has failed. I'll be testing this by switching out the switches for passenger side and driver side (if possible) to see what happens. I'm not expecting this to be the issue, but I like to be thorough.
- Roof not retracting
When I push down on the button, the pump starts going so I figure it's not a fuse/relay issue. When I pull the button, it flashes red. I've got the cover pulled out and I can hear the switch click when pressing it. I think the locking mechanism switch is also OK, because when I twist the rod, I can faintly hear a clicking sound which I think is the switch engaging, checking if the latch is latched. Lastly, I haven't checked the trunk closed switches on the rear wheelwells yet as I haven't gotten to taking out the entire lining from the boot. This will probably be a job I'll get to next weekend.
Now I'm not sure if the driver window not lowering might also cause the roof button to flash red. If so, I figure there's a good chance the actuator and/or motor have failed. However, the passenger side window also does not lower when pulling the roof button (my sense of logic tells me that it should, even if the driver side one doesn't), which leads me to believe the flashing button isn't due to the window issue but due to a switch either not engaging or failing.
I hope to know more during the course of the week. If I can't figure it out, I'll head to a dealer to have the Vario error checked so I (hopefully) will be a little less clueless
