Smile Hello :) Looking to become a fellow SLK owner!

Hey everyone, I thought I'd join up and introduce myself as I've been rummaging around these forums silently as a guest for a couple of weeks now

I live in Edinburgh in the UK and I currently own a Toyota Celica. However, in the next 6-12 months I'm planning on trading up and treating myself to an SLK! I really badly wanted to move up to a V8 but unfortunately the SL55 is pretty unrealistic at the moment (maybe in a few years though )

As a trade off, I'm now investigating the SLK 350 V6 instead as they're a little cheaper to buy and the newer models have lower tax and better MPG here in the UK - the BlueEfficiency I think? I also really like the front end on the newer SLKs
I've never owned a decent car (read that as a car that actually required you to maintain a proper service history) and I've certainly never owned a Mercedes, so I was hoping to get a more realistic idea of what I'm letting myself in for with regards to upkeep and servicing costs.

I'm not massively concerned about fuel costs as I only do around 9k miles per year, but servicing costs and parts are more of a concern as I've heard that even basics like brake discs/pads can come in at £1500 on the newer SLKs. I spoke to Mercedes at the weekend and they offer service plans but it doesn't sound like they cover anything except filters, plugs and fluids so I'm not sure that's really going to be the best option for covering servicing costs. Any advice on the reality of owning one of these would be super appreciated!

I'm probably looking at around 2012-2014 age wise to get something in my price bracket (under £17,000) and under 45k miles ideally.

All of this being said, I'm aware that the 250 CDI is much easier to come by, significantly cheaper to buy and obviously much cheaper to run so I haven't completely ruled that out, but I'm just not sure I can bring myself to go back to the boring sound of diesel. But also not sure I can justify all the extra expense of a V6 if the only difference is the sound and a slightly shorter 0-60. My local dealership have several 250s I can test drive but they told me the 350s are rare and they haven't had any in for a couple of years.

I'm taking my time over the decision as I want to make sure I don't make a mistake but I'm pretty excited about joining the SLK club I'm also having a driveway fitted at my house just now so I'll be able to park it off road when I get it as my existing car keeps getting bumped while it's parked

It's lovely to meet you (digitally) all and I look forward to reading all about your cars here on the forums !

55 greetings from London, Sarah!

With a relatively low annual mileage, personally, I would urge you to still consider a V8, although I haven't seen a 172/55 under £23k, so it might be a stretch.

In any event, the best thing to do is go and drive a few different iterations and see with which you are most comfortable, with respect to both ergonomics and performance. I was dead-set on a 350, right until I drove a 55 for the first time. Then I went back and did some research and was pleasantly surprised to find both the insurance and servicing very little more than for a 350. And with respect to servicing, a reliable local independent Mercedes specialist is in most cases a better experience than a main dealer. Personally, I'm not an advocate of service plans either - never thrilled to pay for anything before I really need it...
Most service items, of o/e specification can be had from secondary suppliers and fitted by independents at vastly reduced labour costs. The trick, of course, is to locate a highly recommended 'indy', but perhaps other members around 'Auld Reekie' can assist you there.
For what it's worth, the running costs for my 55 over the last five years have been much lower than I budgeted for and I don't even frown when pulling up to the pump for a fill of super-unleaded. There's a good reason for that!

Hi @sarie and welcome from Northamptonshire.

Edinburgh is my second favourite Scottish city - after Aberdeen (my home town).

This is the perfect site to answer all your questions - but be warned, everyone will have an opinion.

As a 250CDi owner, I would, of course, advocate the diesel, both for it's relatively cheap running costs - low tax, low insurance and of course, good mpg figures (I'd expect high 40's/low 50's mpg depending on how hard it is driven), for very little loss of performance. Sure, it doesn't have the throaty warble of a V6 or V8, but it has reasonably good performance.

I have a service plan on mine so the basics are covered when I need it rather than when i can afford it, and an extended (third-party) warranty, but I see this as a just-in-case insurance rather than a necessity,

There are plenty of ex-lease fairly basis 250CDis around (I know, 'cos mine was one), the trick is to get one with as many extras as you can afford. In Scotland, I'd suggest looking for Airscarf and heated seats as a minimum, Comand, lighting pack, folding mirrors etc if you can.

Of course, you may opt for another flavour - whatever you do, make sure it has the specs you want. You may have this car for a long time, and you don't want to be saying 'Oh I wish it had....(fill inn blank here).

For this site, look out for the UK & Ireland Members Location Map and the 2018 UK Meet Calendar - both of these are useful to show you where we all are, and where we will be, as we have a pretty hectic meet schedule (if that sort of thing floats your boat).

Remember:' Search is your friend'.

Hi Sarah, and welcome to SLKWorld.com from the UK Midlands - Thanks for joining us and posting an intro, and good luck with your search!

We have quite a few members in the UK that like to meet up from time to time. If you're interested in joining us sometime, just keep an eye on the UK Region section, as we post meeting plans there!

There is a summary post that I maintain for our UK meets here. Links to examples and pictures from last year's meets are available here. We're a friendly group, and always happy to welcome new members at any of our meets.

We're also plotting where our UK members are - check out the thread for that here: SLKWorld UK & Ireland Members and Meeting Points Map - Please let me know if you'd like to be added to the map.

Thank you

Thank you so much for the warm welcome everyone! I will certainly keep an eye on the UK meet dates and if any come up that I think I can make I will have to pop along and say hello and check out all the different flavours of SLK you all have!

Terminal, thank you so much for all the extra information - and thanks a lot () for tempting me back onto the 55. The temptation is real. There's a 171 (2008) SLK 55 not far from here with only 26k on the clock for a little under £20k and I must admit if I was in a position to buy today, I'd be sorely tempted to go and check it out.
I noticed when I looked the other day that the insurance wasn't much more than the 350, but I wasn't sure about servicing - I assumed that having AMG parts would whack up the cost of servicing significantly vs the 350 but if that's not the case then it may leave the SLK55 back up for debate...

If I were to go for a 171 rather than a 172 then I'd be a little less concerned about maintaining a main dealership history, although to be honest I'll very likely be keeping any SLK I purchase for the long haul, or until it becomes impractical so I suppose either way it's probably not going to be an issue! I think the only way I'd be able to get a 55 in my budget would be to go for the 171 though as like you say, the 172/55 tend to be mid-twenties which will really stretch my budget with all the additional costs on top.
I guess I'd kind of assumed that the cost of running an SLK 55 would be far higher than running a 350 so, despite the fact I really want a V8, I'd ruled it out pretty early on, although this is why I was so keen to hear from you guys

I really appreciate the advice regarding servicing too, I'll look into indy Mercedes specialists up here as I'm sure there will be a few about as Mercs are pretty common in Edinburgh. If there are any members up around this way I'd certainly love to hear from them I'll also more than likely look into extended warranties too, although I know many aren't worth the paper they're written on but if I end up going down the 250 route then I'll likely buy it direct from MB so that'll make the warranty situation a little easier to deal with.

The more sane part of my brain tells me I should get a 250CDi because as Quaser says, they're relatively cheap to run and have great mpg vs performance. I work with vehicle audio for a living though so there's a little part of me that just keeps pushing me back towards the V6/V8, even if it's really not the sensible option haha! It's such a lot of money for the sound though but I can't help it.
I suppose the best thing I can do is get out and test drive the three different models and get a taste for them; the main issue being finding a 350 and 55 nearby to test drive - the nearest ones are around 70 miles away at the moment, which is close enough if I was going to consider buying, but a little far to just go for a test drive. For now at least - but it may come to that though to help me make a decision if nothing pops up more locally in the next few months.

As for "in Scotland you'd suggest airscarf and heated seats" - HAHA, you're not wrong. Ideally I'd just have a car that catches fire when I climb inside as that's about the only way I'm staying warm up here in winter

Thanks so much for the friendly reception and the information and advice everyone! It's really useful to hear from owners of two totally different beasts as I'm really torn just now and it's helping to give me a better picture of what the different models involve. It's going to be a pretty major purchase so I'm taking the time to plan and research in advance this time around rather than impulse buying as I have in the past

Hi Sarah - the 350's a nice car, even an older one. Welcome from the Great Lakes!

And it's a warm welcome from Aberdeen, well Inverurie but no-one really knows where Inverurie is, so it easier to say Aberdeen

Can't remember names but we also have a few members from the central belt - Dundee / Grangemouth (?) and Kinghorn off the top of my head.

hi from hull

even though i can do all the work on my car i have always had it serviced at Mb of hull every 2 years. normaly around £250 for minor service plus mot and £400 for major plus mot. road tax on mine was £285 last time and insurance was £270 fully comp with 10 years ncd.
a good set of tyres will set you back arround £600 fitted , brakes front and rear will set you back arround £260 from merc but thats without fitting as i do my own.
my 350 is a bit of a odd one on here being a manual and with designo interior , the gearbox is my preferance however i have driven hundereds of merc vehicles over the years from cars to actros and trust me they make good autos. just make sure the gearbox has been serviced on a auto.

fuel on mine is normaly from 26mpg to 36mpg , lower range if i am out with myk !

the slk55 is a great car but does come with bigger bills but not by to much and i would have one but for the fact i like my 350 to much and its never to far away from the 55 on runs out

do you homework on any car you look at and buy on its condition not how many gadgets it has as some will tell you.

enjoy the search

Pete

Welcome Sarah, I had the same criteria when looking 12 months ago. I eventually got a great spec 2012 350 good history, mechanically & cosmetically perfect. The car has been perfect in every way, I don't do huge mileage so economy is not of paramount importance, however, the blue efficiency, stop/start makes it pretty good on fuel. As said, do plenty of homework/test drives and checking on here. Good luck.
Tom.
