Hello from the top of Illinois
Hi All ... not a car fanatic, but I really do like my SLK. I drove a CLK320 convertible for about ten years, and gave it to my son when he turned 16 so I'd have an excuse to update. When I was young, I had an MGB and then a Fiat 850 Spider, both of which I enjoyed driving, and I was interested in getting another roadster. I liked the CLK, but the SLK really ups the driving game.
I'm joining the forum in search of some advice, and I've already found something to try. The problem is the COMAND system. About a year ago, I had a problem with it coming on and within maybe 5 or 6 seconds, the controls would lock up. If I switched to the radio immediately on startup, the radio would come on, but then the only control that would work is the volume control. I could switch to the USB right after startup, and the same thing with that; I couldn't switch to the radio or nav or anything. And the system would reboot after about 2 minutes, and keep rebooting at that interval for as long as the car was running. After each reboot, I had that few second interval to change the station, turn the unit off, change modes, etc., then the controls locked up again.
I took it into a dealer, the put their "top guy" on it, and decided the whole thing needed to be replaced. I'd suggested, based on a little research I'd done, that maybe the system needed be reset, but apparently they weren't interested in trying that. Fortunately, I had a third party warrantee on the car, and they sent out a guy to look at the problem before they would approve a claim. He said, "Reset", which they did, and everything worked fine. Until a few days ago. I didn't know what the dealer did to reset the system (using the reset on the system menu doesn't work, as the system always freezes up before a reset happens), and I didn't want to take it back to the dealer because I don't trust them, and they always charge a bundle no matter how little they do. I thought to pull some fuses, and I tried pulling the 11 and 26, left them out for a while, but that made no difference.
I see that doing a reset by disconnecting the neg terminal on the battery has been suggested for some COMAND problems, so I'll try that next.
