car sagas and woes

So last Wednesday the 1999 SLK passes its MOT and I am feeling a bit more confident about the car. Didn't start one week after purchase in March - just needed a new battery and the exhaust was blowing but just needed a clamp tightening.

On Sunday reversed out of my parking space and it stalled- very unusual for an automatic, and then I couldn't get it started, what’s worse is I am now blocking the road in a car stuck in gear that I cant move- I had to get a neighbour to drive across the grass to get around me.

Fortunately have a friend who is an Audi Technician and a whiz at sorting car issues and he popped around in five minutes and freed the gearbox from drive to neutral so we could unblock the road (at least it was a good way to introduce myself and say hello- and sorry- to lots of new people).

He soon had the electrics out and was checking solenoids and managed to get the engine running. He said I best get on ebay and get one of these circuit boards and simply swap it over. In the meantime another neighbour has come out as he heard the fan running at high speed and new it was an electrical issue and he happens to be an auto electrician, I’ve never met him before but he was extremely knowledgeable and got his snap on diagnostics kit out and had a look.

He disagrees with the first diagnosis (it was like two cats in the street staring each other out over territory) so I ask him to have a proper look on Monday and he finds that the fault lies with the gearbox oil level being low so the computer has shut the engine down via the immobiliser to prevent and damage and that there is nothing wrong with anything else on the car and the car and its computer have done their job.

He has tricked the gearbox into thinking that there is 30cc more oil in it so I can drive carefully two miles to the garage I use- he has also driven down the road and parked it outside my house.

Called my garage and have it booked for Thursday- can’t get the day off so was going to drive it there this morning, leave it and pick it up on the way home on Thursday afternoon. I haven’t used it since it was running on Monday- he had it running to demonstrate it was fine, got in started it and it cut out again after 10 seconds and will not start just like on Sunday.

Fortunately garage are going to pop by and trailer it tomorrow to their premises but I cant help feeling that I am jinxed a little bit at the moment- Tumble dryer packed up on Saturday morning (replacement coming on Saturday, another £200) as well. I know that these things all get sorted but it isn’t half turning into stressful week.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

After 24 days off the road I've finally picked the car up this morning. In the end they have replaced the air mass flow meter, at one stage it was going to be £750 for a new throttle body- I've had some sleepless nights!

All in I got change from £300 which included further diagnostics and trailering to their works.

The car drives lovely and its was valeted as well. I am very happy today, the sun is shining and i'm going out with the roof down to enjoy it.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

And to update as of today (Friday)- Car breaks down- engine cuts out. AA patrol agrees that it is the circuit board so I am now on the hunt for a K40 relay- any ideas?

Welcome to SLKWorld.com: The #1 Mercedes-Benz SLK Forum from Florida!

Some tips to make your visit here more enjoyable:
If you haven’t, please use the 'search' feature at the top right of the page for your questions as they have probably been asked before. Remember, ‘Search’ is your friend.
If you wish to become PM (Private Message) capable or to ‘edit’, you need 15 posts. To get those 15 posts quickly, just go to the ‘New members introduce yourself here’ section and welcome enough new members to obtain your needed posts to PM/edit. You can always pm a moderator.
Want to post a picture? Start a new thread or make a post, click ‘edit’, click on the ‘paper clip’ or ‘advanced’ and/or ‘manage attachments’ then ‘choose file’ then ‘upload’ and ‘submit’! If Iphone pics, you need to rename any additional pics as Iphone names its pics all the same, image.jpg.
Want to ‘like’ or thank’ someone’s comments? Use the ‘like’ button to the right or the ‘Thanks’ button, bottom right of any post you like. This saves you having to comment.
New members should be aware that the 'New Posts' link next to the 'Search' link top right of the info bar is a great way to see all of the posts you have missed since you were on the forum last. Remember to click 'mark forums read' under ‘quick links’ when you leave.
FREE!! Post your vin in the Vehicle Datacard Request section to get a free datacard (options on your car). You must update your profile with vehicle info and your location and post an introduction first.

I had K40 go bad on me and it was not the solder joints. Some how three of the five solenoids stopped working. I traced power right up to the coils but nothing across or past them.
I bought one from ebay and after the swap everything works as it should.

Hi and welcome to SLKWorld.com from the UK Midlands - Thanks for joining us!

I hope you get the issue sorted soon. As Jeff says, post your VIN in your other thread and we'll try to confirm the part number for you.

We have quite a few members in the UK that like to meet up from time to time. If you're interested in joining us sometime, just keep an eye on the UK Region section, as we post meeting plans there!

There's a summary post that I maintain for all UK meets here, and links to examples and pictures from this year's past meets are available here.

Finally, we've also just started plotting where our UK members are - check out the thread for that here: SLKWorld UK & Ireland Members and Meeting Points Map

Welcome from the Wirral.

17 year old cars sometimes need a little tlc to get them into shape.
Although any problems do give a bit of stress if you imagine the worst.

But once you get beyond that they are smile machines.

Hopefully, once this issue is fixed, you'll be back on the smile trail again.

I bought the car in March, 2015 was a good year at work so I thought I'd treat myself and I've never had a convertible before. This car is rust free with less than 76,000 miles on the clock- not bad for a 1999 UK car.

It had spent most of the last four years in a (dry and secure) Barn/warehouse alongside a collection of Aston Martins (owner said they were crap!) as the owner spent most of the time in Cyprus.

Since buying it I've put a new battery in, replaced the duo valve, stereo (awaiting proper fitting for DAB aerial) and now needs this K40 relay. Once this is done all I need is a PSE unit- yes of course this doesn't work, and at last I am good to go.

On the days that it does work it is fantastic drive and as it is rust free my plan is to run it for years- the engine is mint, but it's fair to say that my confidence has been knocked in September especially this week, however I can say that after joining this forum and getting all the welcome hellos from all over the world has cheered me up no end- I really appreciate it and the comments/ videos, I am in the right place for the help and tips I require- thank you all. I'm going to try and post some pics-

Welcome

Hi & big welcome to the world of SLK motoring, don't get too worried about these teething problems most of us have been there.
Once your car is sorted you'll be able to enjoy what the SLK does best with a big smile, and if you find a problem you can't fix this club is a fountain of knowledge.

Enjoy.
