New 2003 SLK320 owner here – my first Mercedes.
I joined a few weeks ago but between “life” and a bad computer I have not yet checked in. I’ve been a involved in motorsports fun since the mid-70’s starting out with American muscle cars – but turning to motorcycles and motorcycle racing in my early 20’s – mostly European bikes – Nortons, Triumphs, my first new motorcycle was a 1980 Ducati 900SS, I’ve had near 40 motorcycles over my life – at one time I had 12 running bikes – from a 1947 Norton M18 to a Buell 1125CR and a SWM Trials bike to Husqvarna Ice racer/SuperMoto bike …I left he automobile world behind as four wheels meant only a motorcycle hauler. As I’ve got older I’ve simplified to just two bikes – a 1987 Ducati Paso I bought new and a 2014 BMW R1200GS that I’ve put close to 25K on in the last year – I no longer race, but do long distance “Iron Butt” style rally’s and “intense” touring.
As I hit my 50’s I got a V8 Jeep and started having 4-wheel fun. I picked up a nice 1992 Corvette a few years ago and did some tracks days, sold the car two years ago thinking I was going to by a newer C6 Grand Sport. I got a new motorcycle instead (the GS) and started looking for a little “less$$” car. I tried a 2011 BMW 128i convertible as a daily driver but was not at all happy with it, serous problems and loss of confidence in the car from day one -just not my cup tea. I went back to a Prius as my commuter.
I looked at a lot of “fun" options, but as I ruled things out for various reason (Vettes; Audi TT; Boxster; 350Z; MR2; Z4’s, etc.) the SL’s and SLK’s started to grow on me – especially the SLK V6.
I feel very fortunate to have found mine – an unmolested; original owner (newly retired medical doctor that wants to travel and just wasn’t driving it anymore), dealer maintained its whole life – 87,200 miles with the AMG Sport Package, the designo Package, Value added package, and a manual! The window sticker was in the owner’s manual portfolio. The car is near mint; one headlight washer door is a bit askew but basically it’s “perfect” one tiny scratch and one very minor ding (broom fell on a fender). As I have e dealer just a few miles away I took it in for an inspection and told them to give it good look over – I detailed the weekend before and was stunned at how clean the car was after some light detailing – the under carriage, engine compartment, and interior are all like new! The paint and body near perfect. This car is truly like new – it’s clear this car has never seen harsh weather or been abused in anyway.
I replace the old hockey puck tires with some Michelin Super Sports; replaced the steering “shock” as it had a slight loose spot in the middle. This car runs and drives like new! The only thing that didn’t work when I bought it was the CD changer… “No CD Player” error code … I took the player out and took the case off and cleaned and lubed the slider parts (per a YouTube) and it now seems to be fine – at least so far it’s working excellent – I love the car has a cassette player and the 6-disk changer. I play the drums and have been a music aficionado for many years, I still spin vinyl and load tape.
I’ve put about 800 miles on the car - loving my SLK320!
