Wink Better Late Than Never?

Hi,

I'm Karl. I've been a lurker and sometimes poster since August 2010, but Jeff recently asked me to finally get around to posting an intro, so I'll give it a whirl.

I purchased my 2005 firemist red SLK350 new, and it's stock all the way. (VIN WDBWK56F65F062910). Is it my "midlife crisis" toy? Probably. It's been my fair-weather-only fun driver (my VA vanity plates are "FUN SLK") all of these years, and as such has a shamefully low 15K miles on the odometer. (My daily driver is a Ford Expedition, which is more applicable to our retired lifestyle that includes a big Golden Retriever, along with continuous hauling of grain, sawdust bales, tack, and a two-horse trailer in support of my wife's two horses).

I love my SLK350 overall, but it had some early 2nd-generation growing pains. On a road trip to PA, the engine died while on I-95 in MD, and it had to take two rollback trips to two dealers (one in MD, one in VA) over a two-week period before the 2nd dealer diagnosed a broken valve spring. This was at 2500 miles. (BTW, my friends say I drive like a granny, although (beyond the owner's manual stipulated break-in period), I've subscribed to the philosophy, "It's not how fast you go, it's how fast you get from zero to the max posted speed limit" ). The next year the (apparently widely-known early 2nd-generation) tranny control module went whacko on another road trip in rural southwest VA, requiring another rollback trip to my home dealership to replace the defective module under warranty. Since then, though, very little out of the ordinary other than my self-induced issues because it sits idle, covered in the garage, from December until early March every year. Every spring it gets an oil/filter change, and other necessary preventative maintenance, although I usually bring my Mercedes service writer to tears because I don't let them sell me their super-expensive maintenance "packages" that include various work I can do myself.

Of course, my biggest repeating maintenance issue, and the one that this forum has helped me the most, is cleaning out my HVAC blower box and replacing the cabin air filter every spring. The field mice spend the over-winter months chewing off firewall insulation and making nests in the blower box. The first spring that happened I let Mercedes do the clean-out, but they didn't bother to put the filter housing back together correctly, so I've done it myself since. I'd rather have the aches and pains and bruises from twisting upside down in the passenger footwell, and at least knowing after the clean-out everything goes back together correctly (thanks to the DIY instructions and photos found in this forum).

Okay, Jeff. I've provided TMI, but at least now I hope I'm "legal" on the forum. Cheers!!

Some tips to make your visit here more enjoyable:
If you haven’t, please use the 'search' feature at the top right of the page for your questions as they have probably been asked before. Remember, ‘Search’ is your friend.
If you wish to become PM (Private Message) capable, you need 15 posts. To get those 15 posts quickly, just go to the ‘New members introduce yourself here’ section and welcome enough new members to obtain your needed posts to PM.
Want to post a picture? Start a new thread or make a post, click ‘edit’, click on the ‘paper clip’ or ‘advanced’ and/or ‘manage attachments’ then ‘choose file’ then ‘upload’ and ‘submit’! If Iphone pics, you need to rename any additional pics as Iphone names its pics all the same, image.jpg.
Want to ‘like’ or thank’ someone’s comments? Use the ‘like’ button to the right or the ‘Thanks’ button, bottom right of any post you like. This saves you having to comment.
New members should be aware that the 'New Posts' link next to the 'Search' link top right of the info bar is a great way to see all of the posts you have missed since you were on the forum last. Remember to click 'mark forums read' under ‘quick links’ when you leave.

Welcome from the Sacramento Valley SLK Enthusiasts!

Wow a member since 2010 and Jeff convinced you to introduce yourself, thanks Jeff!

Thank goodness they were field mice and not roof rats like we have in N. California, they can cause major damage.

Yup, but our 43 kg goofy Golden Retriever needs a bigger passenger seat than my R171 can provide... even with the window open. He does better in our Expedition's way-back.

Same with ours but it saves fuel when pulling away from traffic lights

Fur is like sand. It goes where it wants and gathers where you least want it.
