CDI rev limit

Hi all,
I have just bought a 2013 SLK 250 CDI in Tenorite Grey, with black leather seats and Airscarf, 10,500 miles, and I have added a Becker Nav (Ł170 ebay). It is, without doubt, the most beautiful thing I have ever owned. I went for the non-AMG version because some of the reviews mentioned a 'harsh ride' and 'crashing over potholes'. Although others have refuted this, the country roads round my way are pretty bad and I didn't want to risk it. Also the larger alloy wheels looked vulnerable to kerb damage, something I became paranoid about when parking my MR2 MK3 (coincidentally the same colour scheme, metallic dark grey & black leather). I also think the non-AMG model has a more classic look, although this is personal preference, as the AMG version looks great too. When I first got the car I tried a longish drive with the top down: 1 degree C in February, but with the windows up, mesh deflector in place, and the heater and airscarf on it was perfectly comfortable. I have read a lot of critisism about the Roadster/diesel mix, but I particulary wanted a diesel for the muscular 369 ft/lbs of torque which feels terrific. It also sounds fine, with tickover barely more than a purr, and a powerful deep growl under acceleration. Not the rattling London taxi that some would have you believe. The only concern I have about the car is that if I floor it in sport mode, the tacho goes into the red. Surely this shouldn't happen with an Automatic? I have never driven any of my manual cars past the red line, and I don't like it. I now keep an eye on the tacho, and lift off to allow it to change up before the red line. Does anyone else find the same? How rigid is the rev limit? It doesn't do it in 'E' mode, even with kickdown, but in sport mode I have seen the needle almost touch 5000 rpm with foot hard on the floor in second gear.

Hi and welcome to SLKWorld.com from the UK Midlands - Thanks for joining us!

I can't answer your question about the behaviour of the 250 CDI and the redline behaviour, as I've never driven the diesel. I'm sure someone with the same car will be along shortly to share their experience.

Hi fron Warwickshire

I've also done the same but only to 4500 rpm, there's supposed to be a limiter but no idea when it kicks in.

Unless the gearbox is a bit dimwitted, because there is max torque at 1500rpm and it comes in like the millenium falcon on hyperdrive that it beats the limiter.

Just my view not a fact

Enjoy your SLK.

What you're experiencing is normal.... it's fine for the car to do that in sport mode (assuming the engine is warm) however seemingly pointless in a diesel because the torque curve lies elsewhere, not in the redline.
When I had my 200 the 1st gear was basically non existent and in sport mode it hit the limiter all the time, it's just a characteristic of the sport mode gearbox map. The car has protection systems i.e. fuel shut off..etc to prevent damage occuring.

CDI rev limit

Thank you all for the welcome. It is reassuring to hear that the car's behaviour is normal. I always make sure the car is well warmed up before giving it some stick, but I still wince when it goes into the red, and as has been said, with the diesel engine there is really nothing to be gained by it. I think what I'll do from now on is put it in 'E' mode and kickdown for drag starts, which takes it up to the red line but not beyond, and use sport mode for better response on the twisty bits.

Yes indeed, and the Le Mans 24 hour race is a good example.
