Red face Hi from Noordwijkerhout in the Netherlands

Hello SLK World members,

I'm new here and want to introduce myself. I have owned a Ferrari Mondial T since 2006.
I sold it in the beginning of 2015 and after a few months without a "supercar" I found a original 2006 Dutch SLK 55 AMG at the MB dealer Biemond in Aalsmeer.
There were only 79 dkm on it then and it was and is in a very good condition.

I have the AMG now for 8 months and off course find the Merc a much more usable car then the Ferrari. And faster too In all honesty, it is 17 years younger!

I'm thinking about something as a X-pipe, my Ferrari was very loud, and a other kind of steering wheel with shift paddles.

Hi and welcome from the UK Midlands!

I highly recommend having an x-pipe fitted, and many also have the secondary cats deleted at the same time too (that's what I had done - check out the link in my signature)! My x-pipe was created by the exhaust shop using stainless steel pipe, but I know others that have the Magnaflow x-pipe fitted and the results appear to be the same (awesome sound when you step on the loud pedal)!

There may be good reasons for you to want to swap out your steering wheel, but don't do it just to get gear change paddles... there's a much simpler solution for that! Search Google (or this forum) for "gpaddles" or "g-paddles", and you'll see that it's an easy mod to swap out your current gear change buttons for paddles... I have the g-paddles fitted to my AMG, and they're great!

... or, check out the G-Paddles link in my signature for a very long thread on this forum all about them too!

Hi Dave,

Thanks for your remake and advice!

I Just ordered a set of the g-paddles, but that's not the reason for my wist for having another steering wheel. The reason therefore is its form and sertenly the kind of leather. It look a bit cheap and is to smooth. I have seen some German firms on Ebay which can redo with perforated leather!
See this link for example

Mercedes W171 R171 SLK 55 AMG Sport Lenkrad neu beziehen mit Leder | eBay

Dont cost that much and probably feels and looks much better.

Your X-pipe sounds great and I like it very much. But removing the catalysts wil not do in the Netherlands. At the yearly APK the exhaust gases are messured and and if the CO % is over the limed, you don't get an approval. Isn't that the case in your country?

Yes, I agree there are other improvements that can be made to our steering wheels, but I haven't got around to that yet. I might do something one day, but not for a while. I'd love to swap mine out for one from the R172... I've seen threads where others have done this, but it's more work than I'd be able to handle, so a more simple recover in leather might be a better option at some point for me too.

As for the emissions, having deleted the secondary cats - Yes, we have annual testing here in the UK too, but mine still passes that easily (it's called an MOT test). The AMG has primary cats and secondary cats, and I think the primaries do most of the work at reducing emissions (and I still have my primaries in place). Here's a thread where I posted copies of the emission test results for my car after I'd had the secondary cats removed, and also a copy of some results from 3 years earlier (when all cats were in place):
https://www.slkworld.com/2258601-post144.html

And the most recent one I can find from the previous owner was from July 2012, as follows:

CO: Limit 0.2 - Actual 0.001
HC: Limit 200 - Actual 45

I guess it depends exactly what your emissions regulations are in the Netherlands, but removing the secondary cats in the UK doesn't cause an issue at all... all is still well within the required limits!
