SLK200 Starting Problems

Hello I am a nw member who lives in Warrington, Cheshire, United Kingdom.
I have a 2004 SLK200 that has an intermittent starting fault. I can switch on the ignition and illuminate all warning lights. I turn the starter and nothing happens. I retry with varying results sometimes it starts straight away, other times after a number of activation.
I have had a full Mercedes diagnostic check with no faults found. I have replaced key batteries and have been advised to check the car battery level when the car refuses to start. with the ignition still on after failure to start the voltage shows 11.90volts. Switch off the ignition and it shows 12.40volts. There is no regular pattern to this but it is more likely to happen when the engine is cold, but this is not always the case. Can anyone advise please

Welcome to the elite SLKWorld forum!

Just a few suggestions to make your time here a fun and informative experience...

The "Search" feature at the top right of the page is for searching the forum. Many questions have already been asked and answered by our knowledgeable members.

If you are having difficulty finding a solution, you can post your question in the appropriate discussion forum. By doing this, you should receive a quicker response, but please be patient as the forum is worldwide and members live in different time zones.

Private Message (pm) is a tool to communicate with other members privately for instructions or just chatting. In order to do this you must have at least 15 posts. It's easy to obtain the posts by clicking on the New Members Introduce Yourself Here section and just welcome the new members (like we welcomed you).

To post a picture, either start a new thread or reply to one, type what you want to say and click on the 'paper clip' just above, this will open a window to your left, click on 'browse', go to your pictures, and double click on the one you want to post, click on 'upload' and then 'submit' your post.

If you like a comment or want to thank another member for their post, there's a 'like' button to the right and just below is the 'thanks' button.

As a new member you can use the New Posts link at the top of the info bar. It's a great way to see all of the posts you have missed since you were on the forum last.

When you are ready to leave the forum just click on "Quick Links" and click 'mark forums read', this will clear your screen for when you log on again.

Post your vin in the Vehicle Data Card Request section to get a data card (options on your car) free.

As a member you have the privilege to vote and/or enter our Ride of the Month competition, we welcome new SLKs to compete and new members to vote.

If you have any questions/comments please let us know and we will be happy to help you.

Thanks for joining our SLK family!

Several possibilities. Automatic, yes? Try the neutral switch first as it is easiest - with the ignition switch in the start position, with your other hand gently wiggle the gear selector.
The ignition barrels can play up on these cars, so that is the next port of call, then it could be a sensor on the crankshaft. If none of these then it could be the starter motor.
Who carried out the 'full Mercedes diagnostic check'? If it was a dealer, they should know all this - it is a common enough fault...

Hi Tony, welcome to the forum.

Highlighted above. Can you clarify.

Do you mean that the engine is cranking/turning over OK on the starter but just does not fire and start. OR Do you mean that the starter is not cranking the engine over at all.:|

Hi Tony and welcome to the forum from sunny France..:smile:

Darn nuisance that this is an intermittent fault...as these can be notoriously difficult to rectify..

I'm sure you have already checked all lead connections are tightly made..

Battery condition is critical with our lovely cars... keeping them fully charged is essential..

will be following this thread with great interest .. good luck..

Some good suggestions already.
You had an MB diagnostics check without faults.
That has to be the big clue.

The experts will track this down.
Probably a twopenny halfpenny part, or cleaning a connection.
