(New Member) Start-up Issues SLK 350

I have an '05 SLK 350 w/27k miles, delivered in '04. Over the past two years I have encountered randon occurances of the engine not cranking. I have had a new crank sensor and sender installed, a new battery installed and the clutch switch adjusted twice (manual tranny). The car does really well for awhile, then - nothing. I wait, try again and eventually, it starts. I'm never sure if I'm going to be stranded. I even changed keys, didn't matter. This work was all done by the dealer. Any other suggestions are greatfully welcomed. Thanks for reading.

That is troubling. I would assume they've also done the obvious - looking at the hard connections to the starter etc? As noted above...you'll soon be getting more questions and answers hopefully!

Do you hear all the normal sounds from the key area when this happens?

Yes, I do hear the normal tones and clicks, all lights on the dash are proper, just as if all was okay. However, no engine turn over. I spoke to a Merc Tech today and he thinks we might want to replace the clutch switch (the one that's been adjusted a couple of times).

Welcome from London via a decidedly top-up Rio de Janeiro. Clutch sensor seems like a logical place to start - but not a lot of experience in troubleshooting manual SLK's. Kinda doubt a "suppressed start due to clutch position" is a stored fault, which could make it harder to diagnose....

I have no practical experience and little to offer, but the service manual/CD ETM does mention how to check the switch: with the ignition off, check for zero ohms between ME pin 39 and ground when switch is "activated". There are two separate clutch switches, one to pin 39 and one to pin 26. I'm not really sure how to access the ME connector to make this measurement, and there appear to be two different connectors on the ME, "M" and "F", each with its own "pin 39"... I guess you could check both?

Thanks for your input. For the time being, I think I'll let the "experts" continue to hunt. Lars.
