Question Should I buy it?

Hi Folks.

I'm so new I haven't even bought a Merc yet but have just test driven an SLK 230 2002 registered with 41k miles on the clock which seems to be genuine going by the service history and MOT record. The only thing that makes me question this are the chip marks on the bonnet which are far more numerous than on the bonnet of my family car which is 2007 and has done 40k miles!
Sun roof is fine, bonnet is being re-sprayed, interior is good with all switches working, tyres are all new and alloys have been re-furbed. It is a 6spd manual and is smooth if a little vague but I believe this is normal, the engine pulls well and feels smooth and refined but I am concerned about a quiet but noticeable rattle coming from underneath the red cam cover which occurs between 1500-2000 revs then stops as revs climb but then does it again on the way back down, but only momentarily!
The brakes were poor but having checked disc and pad prices I'm not too concerned, my main worry is this rattle which I have asked the garage to look at. It is not a Merc dealer and as car is 9 years old will only come with a 60 day warranty (details tbc) but I know of a local indie who could check it over for me.
Other than these concerns my wife and I are really keen on it but I am cautious to the point of paranoia and don't want to get ripped off. Any advice would be very welcome indeed.
Cheers for now.

Col.

Hi again folks.
One other point I meant to add is that it is unbadged all round except for boot/trunk Merc badge and the Merc symbol on the front grill! Is this normal or a possible sign of vandalism or respray?
Thanks, Col.

Hey Col - "debadging" is pretty popular in Europe and the UK, so I'd not be really concerned about that.

On the hood chips, I personally think that Merc's are more prone to this that other manufactures. Not sure if it's the paint formulation or what - but it seems to be pretty normal.

Only thing that concerns me would be the "sunroof" comments - seeing as the SLK's don't have sunroofs! :-)

Ooops!!

Hi John.

Thanks for that and sorry about roof gaff which only registered with me after I posted. It does as, as you would hope, have a fully functioning electrically operated steel folding roof.

Cheers, Col.

Welcome from New Hampshire, as mentioned above the chips are normal, my guess would be that the car sits lower than most so it gets hit more.

Welcome from Phoenix. I would not worry about the chips my neighbor told me the clear coat for the r170 was too hard so it chips more easy. I trust him he works in a Body shop. If you worry about a front end crash check the more hidden places under the hood. No Body shop can hide it perfectly. Buying an Slk is like going out on a 1st Date if it feels right go 4 it and worry about bills later. if you have 2nd thoughts to call her in the morning or the next day well run and trust your instincts same goes for the perfect Slk. At least it worked for me. Cheers

Hello and welcome from Ottawa Canada. Mother's family hails from north of Inverness and I've spent many wonderful days there when I flew from RAF Kinloss in the 80's (mostly) and 90's. Col as in Collin or Colonel?!

Could the rattle be lifters? As revs go up so does oil pressure to some degree; also the higher RPM tends to smooth out the lifter noise.

What is the price they are asking? By the sounds of it a dealer? Might be worth the money to have MB dealer have a look. Best of luck!

I rather like the debadged look. Who wants to go round with the size of their "engine" embroidered onto back of their trousers?

Going for it!!

Hi Der Flieger.
It's Col as in Colin and my father came from the North West of Inverness which is a glorious part of the world. I have decided to buy the car so I am looking forward very much to enjoying the views with the roof down. I spoke to an independent Merc specialist today whose comments on the noise were same as yours and he definitely doesn't think it's the supercharger as they are generally trouble free. The garage I'm buying from is a Peugeot dealer and I am actually trading in a 308 HDI so it's a match made in heaven really plus I'm getting cash back on the deal as the 308 is only 2 years old! The Merc is Ł7k which is good for the milage and general condition, and made more acceptable by a favourable trade in as they are obviously keen on my car which I also bought from them.

Thanks again for comments and to everyone else for their welcome and comments.

Cheers, Colin.

Finally picked up car today and am very happy with it so far and it must be a good omen that it was 22*c in Inverness with clear blue skies so I was able to drive it away with the roof down. Dealer put new front discs and pads on so dodgy brakes are now up to scratch. Will update on progress over the coming weeks.

Cheers.

Well done Col!! 22C in Inverness - that's bloody global warming mate!

Sounds like you made a good deal (by definition, one you're happy with); also good that new fronts were part of the deal. Do you know what's left on the back? As with most if not all cars, the fronts do the majority of the work.

Now...let's see some pics!! SLK with some Scottish scenery. Maybe one in front of the Royal Hotel in Forres for me for old times sake?

Hi.

I haven't actually checked the backs my self but am having the car checked over tomorrow by an independent MB specialist, so fingers crossed. Found my first fault when filling screen wash reservoir and discovered it was leaking out beneath the right wing/door so will need to get that fixed. I think it's a leak or hole in the filler neck because it wasn't completely empty, but hey ho!!

Will try to get some nice highland pics posted, especially next month when I go on supercar thrill day out in the southern highlands, but suspect I may need to update my membership before I can do this.

Cheers.

welcome

hi and welcome

just bought a very similar car myself and enjoying it very much as I'm sure you will ... as for chips: same here, and as previous poster said, MB's do seem prone to it - I saw 5 before buying and all were similar.

Having read other posts on here there is a renowned 'flat-spot' at around 3000rpm which may or may not be rattling something a little loose under the bonnet? - just a guess - im new here too . Chip remap? Im thinkin of it myself ... Ł250 for more hp and better mpg? yes please !!

regards
