slk 350

hi all
my first post!!
test drove a 350 today on derbyshires fine country lanes and loved every minute of it ,thing is i could hear a irritating rattle from the passenger side roof which the salesman said was a common thing(locating pin) that was rectified easily with grease, here's my question: is he giving me BS or is this indeed a easy fix with a squirt! or could this be more serious or indeed is this a rattle that most owners put up with,i must say i was very surprised by this in such a "luxury" car and was the only blight on what was a very exhilarating test drive,i have to decide before tomorrow if i want the car so………..
thanks in advance simon

If it's that easy to fix, have 'em fix it! The only problem I've ever heard of with the locating pin is that it get's stuck - not that it rattles!

I'd be a bit cautious - there are a number of bits in the roof mechanism that can work lose and are a pain in the arse to sort.

Hi Simon, welcome from NE England.

How many miles has your prospective 350 done? Were you driving it by yourself when you heard the rattle? The most common cause of a rattle in an R171 is the passenger seat belt buckle clattering on the back of the seat. I've had it a couple of times and the sound is very non-directional. Apart from that, my Nov 2004 350 is very quiet (apart from the engine & exhaust ) - OK, it's only got 6600 miles on it!!

I agree with John (UK-C200), if it's that simple to fix they should fix it and guarantee their work.

There are plenty of SLK 350's around on Autotrader, so if you're not totally happy look for another.

Oh and welcome to the forum...

Was it a rattle or squeak? If the salesman was on board, he may have had the seat too far back and rubbing against the back wall when he was seated. It could also be the rectangular fairing piece that stays up/open against the vertical hinge when the roof is up. Agree...pin is an unlikely candidate. Did it sound like it was coming from the upper combing?

Thumbs up Re rattle

Thanks for all the replys
The rattle is metallic sounding and is from the roof area above the passenger side window/windscreen area , trust me on a 20 min test drive it drove me nuts!!!, yes there are a lot on autotrader but this one is in great nick with 33k on the clock all extras including heated steering wheel so I'm interested!

Could it be the roller in the locking mechanism? John, Woolly, Eddy et al?

My guess is a loose cable that leads to the latch mechanism. It may have come off from one of its anchors. Ask the MB seller to remove the roof liner and inspect.

Or a loose latch that needs adjustment/tightening.

Is the sound still there when driving with the roof retracted in the boot?

Eddy

Welcome from Indy, Simon! I purchased my '06 350(31,900 miles) March 7th. In less than 3,000 miles, the trans (7sp AT) has locked in 6th gear twice. I've contacted MBUSA and they are looking into this matter. Anyway, I'd heartily suggest you have the car checked-out my an MB dealer, just to see if there are any "hidden" problems.

By the way, you've found a great home in SLKW; A wealth of knowledgeable, FRIENDLY people!!!

I had trouble locating a noise from the passenger side Until I realised It was the seat back touching the bulkhead. Passenger had pushed the seat right back
