Extended Warranty or Not?

Hi! I just purchased a 2007 SLK55 AMG 2 door roadster and am wondering do I purchase extended warranty from dealership? If not from dealership, then from existing insurance co.? How much should I be paying?

Welcome from London! Loads of threads on the topic of extended warranties - I have both my AMG's under MB warranty, and did not choose to extend on the '350.

No need, I've been on this forum and other forums since the SLK was introduced back in 04' besides some oil consumption issues with the earlier 05' models, it's been trouble free. I didn't get one for mine. However I do own other cars and I would consider it for my Porsche b/c all the potential problems it may have.

We bought our 2005 350 back in Sept. 08 and did opt for an extended warranty, we bougnt an EasyCare warranty (Total Care was the product) used it a few times worked flawless right through the MB dealer.

Welcome from Michigan..... Other than Service Bulletins (listed on this site) handled on a proactive basis and two burned-out side marker bulbs, have not had any warranty issues or troubles with my car. My car is out of warranty... Currently, it has 40,000 miles, tracked on several occasions and regularly maintained!!!! Enjoy your new ride!!!

Welcome from SoCal.

I got my 2006 SLK350 with an extended warranty from CNA National (through CarMax). It was $2000 for 5 years, 60K (I'm not 100% positive on the mileage right now, might be more), which I thought was a very reasonable price.

I've since used it through the MB dealer to fix the Rear Main Seal, which is a rather expensive repair. The dealer and the warranty company took care of it all between themselves without my intervention, and everything was fixed no questions asked.

I personally find it a good investment for peace of mind. A lot of repairs on this car can get very expensive very quickly, although if all goes well it shouldn't need a lot of repairs of course.

My experience with "extended" warranty was that it was not needed. They only covered major items and for todays cars with regular maintenance seem to outlive the coverage. Both times I've taken an "extended" warranty ... NEVER had a claim.

It's really a crapshoot though.

I'm glad you asked; I've been toying in my mind whether to do it or not also. I have a 2000 slk230 with 133k miles. It sounds good for peace of mind; but then I figure if I keep a reserve of cash on hand allocated solely to potential repairs, perhaps it's less of a gamble--whether I use the money or not, it's still mine. If I pay into an extended warranty, I may or may not use it. Anybody seen my crystal ball?

Welcome from Blighty...

Been thinking exactly the same thing myself recently...... Hmm I'm unsure too. The car has been pretty much faultless so far and was in a recent Which survey as one of the most reliable cars in Europe...

Challenge has an extended warranty by Zurich through the local MBZ dealer. Cost was about 2K and it covers literally everything except for tires, battery and the like. Most dealers will eat the deductible if you have repair through their facility. Insurance is always a gamble, but I would rather have a planned 2K hit than an unplanned multi-thousand dollar hit....maybe more than once.

When I purchased my '06 with 39,500 miles I purchased a 3 year, 24,000 mile warranty with a $200 deductible for $1700. Figure if the AC goes out or a computer goes nuts, or the motor for the top stops working, it won't break me.

It would be helpful if those of you that DID buy a warranty could list their name, 1-800 or their website.

I bought a Tier 1 MB warranty. My car only has 16,000 miles after 3 years and the chances of anything going wrong are slim, cost was Ł720.

The reason I bought it was for total piece of mind. I can enjoy the car and not worry that their may be a large bill if anything goes wrong.

I've been researching the same thing. The two most popular (other than MB) in the US seem to be CarChex and Warranty Direct, based solely on my on-line research.

https://www.carchex.com/ and https://www.warrantydirect.com/

most of the warranties exclude the convertible top, I believe. Just a FYI
