Welcome from Valrico, Florida!
And welcome to this great forum!

First please update your location and vehicle (year?: 1996-2016, model?: 32, 200, 230, 250, 280, 300,320,350,55) in your profile as it helps the members answer your questions which usually are based on that information if you haven’t. This takes about 30 seconds to do.
Follow exactly to update: ‘Usercp’ at the top of page, then ‘edit your details’ on the left side, ‘additional information’ near the bottom, edit your ‘location’ and ‘vehicle’. Info in your garage does not update your profile.

If you haven’t, please use the 'search' feature at the top of the page for your questions as they have probably been asked before.
In addition, if you haven’t, please post your question in the appropriate discussion forum for a quicker response. Be patient and a knowledgeable member or guest will address your question.
If you wish to PM (Private Message) someone, you need 15 posts. To get those 15 posts quickly, just go to the ‘new members introduce yourself here’ section and welcome enough new members to obtain your needed posts to PM.

If it is an R171 200K no need to replace at all. A metal timing chain is used. It is not a service item

PS. R170's have a roller chain as well

Cool Slk timing chain replacement

Hi, I'm Jenny from Wiltshire, UK. I've been told that most timing chains should be replaced every 70,000 miles or so.
Mine recently went on my slk200 without warning. I was 3,000 over my scheduled major service date however. Mechanic told me the oil was so low it caused the chain to snap and it got mangled in the engine. He also said that it prob would have broken anyway. However in the 3 years I had my slk, I never once saw a low oil warning light.......should I have? Is this a problem many others have had? Please let me know!

Its unusual for a timing chain to snap. They normally get very noisy if they are wearing.

Jenny, please post your own intro

Welcome to SLKWorld.com: The #1 Mercedes-Benz SLK Forum from Valrico, Florida!

‘Usercp’ at the top left of page, then ‘edit your details’ on the left side, ‘additional information’ near the bottom, edit your ‘location’ and ‘vehicle’. And it only takes about 30 seconds to do!

You might want to post an introduction in the ‘New members introduce yourself here’ section, if you haven’t already.

I know this is a few years out of date, but since my chain snapped at 130k miles i have researched it and reckon most of the ones that do fail seem to be at about 120k. In future i'm changing any timing chain pre 100k miles.

If it is a M271 design single width chain then it will stretch by one and a half pitch lengths by the time it gets to 95,000 miles. The auto adjuster cannot cope with this so allows the chain to jump the cam sprockets hence putting the valve timing out and bending the valves. A built in self destruct system, one minute the engine runs fine, then, probably on start up the engine light comes on and uneven tick over. If your lucky and it only jumps one or two teeth on the inlet side, it may not connect piston to valve but by three teeth the damage is done.
A none service item is far from the truth.
