Cool Howdy from Texas

Just joined the group, I'm in the market for my first MB. From the '60's until about 2000 I always drove a sports car. MGA, MGB, TR3, Alfa Spyder and enjoyed them all. Now that I'm retired I'm ready for another 2 seat, Convertible. Wife wants a BMW z4, I like the SLK. Where I live there are no mech. for either and I will probably have to go to San Antonio for anything but minor problems. People tell me for this reason alone I need the SLK instead of the Z4, but I think the hard top is kind of important also. Any suggestions or advice will be appreciated. I'm probably about 4 months from a purchase, but will update when I make a decision.

ok ... this is official welcome.

Kerrville? Love that neck of Texas. Wife and I spent a week in Bandera last fall. Made the trip to catch Lost Maple Park to catch the turning of the leaves. Great trip ... great area to hit the roads too! They are made for a sports car driving experience.

Welcome from Virginia. Almost unanimous consensus here, get the SLK. Which model SLK are you interested in, R170, R171, or R172? The SLKs are reliable if properly maintained. Depending on mileage you're looking at a average, one to two service visits a year. Good luck in your decision and hope you join us permanently.

Bandera is one of my favorite places. Classic Country Dance Hall there, Arkie Blue's, everyone should go once.

Welcome from Indy from an "end of first week new owner('06 SLK350)". My first car was an AH Sprite and I've had 2 '66 Vette's and an '03 MR2 Spyder. I love my "new" SLK

Welcome from South Texas! Texas Hill Country is my favorite drive in Texas. You'll love driving an SLK through some of those back roads. Good luck!

Welcome from New Hampshire Seconded.

In regards to which slk; your options are limitless. I'll give you a brief explanation on the older body style and hopefully someone else can inform you on the R171s good points. You can go with an older R170 body style (98-04), which are: nice looking, well priced, descent performance. Overall All Mercedes have bulletproof motors.
Slk230 common issues-MAF, Fuel pump relay, faulty taillight issues, peeling interiors.
Slk320 common issues-faulty taillight issues, Catalytics fail often.
Slk32 -common isssues-intercooler pump
You get what you pay for.

If your wife forces you to get a z4, make sure it is at least the 3.0l. As it is such a better motor than the 2.5l. Or I hate to say it, but....the new mx-5 hardtop convertible looks nice with proven trackable abilities.

Thanks for the good info. Can't find a mec. in Kerrville who wants me to get a BMW, some said they would work on the SLK for minor problems, but I would have to go to SA for anything major. I think we have decided on the MB. Someone suggested the Lexus, said if you couldn't get in the back seat, then it was a two seater. Don't buy that, wife liked it, but I think the SLK is the car.
