Smile lambda sensor

Hi,
My SLK 230 1999 45000 miles has just failed its mot on emissions, gutted eh!! Anyway, the mechanic recommended that I change the LAMBDA sensor! Is this a hard job, where is it, how do I do it? Anyone got any pictures of the sensor being changed?

Welcome from Eugene, Oregon via Seward, Alaska!
The sensors are in the exhaust system; ahead and aft of the Cat.

Most likely yes; the fwd one is to control the A/F mix, and the aft tells you if your Cat is bad

Hello! My name is Nicole and I'm the proud owner of a 2004 SLK320 hartop convertable, black. I live in New Brunswick Canada. Hence the reason for a HARDTOP convertable for our winters. Hopefully I can contribute at some time down the line information for this forum. Feels good to be amongst other MB enthusiats.

Welcome from NW Blighty...

I'm not sure that your car will have a post-cat Lambda (O2) sensor. Wasn't common on UK spec cars at that time, Certainly wasn't mandated.

As for how difficult it is to change, the Lambda sensor looks a bit like a spark plug with a lead attached to it. The lead connects into the loom by plug/socket, so although many Lambda sensors are the same, the different part number call-up the cable and connector too. So it's important to get hold of the right part.

If you can get the car in the air, then it's usually a fairly straight forward job to do. I'd recommend disconnecting the cable first, then thread that through the correctly sized ring spanner. Best way to avoid rounding the nut.
