Lightbulb MPG? R172 250Cdi

Hi, I'm new to the forum and thought I would say hello in my first post to see how other owners get on with their MPG (uk) with the R172 250CDi

I use mine mostly as my company car commute and seem to over the last 25,000miles return an average of 51MPG

Highlights have been 891.9miles to roughly 73litres of diesel

I would be interested to see how others are getting on with their SLK?#

moved your 1st post to the new members introduce yourself section to save you a step

Welcome to SLKWorld.com: The #1 Mercedes-Benz SLK Forum from Valrico, Florida!

Please update your location and vehicle (model and year,ie 2007 SLK 350) in your profile as it helps the members answer your questions which usually are based on that information if you haven’t.
Follow exactly to update: ‘Usercp’ at the top of page, then ‘edit your details’ on the left side, ‘additional information’ near the bottom, edit your ‘location’ and ‘vehicle’. Your profile is NOT updated in your ‘personal garage’.

Some tips to make your visit here more enjoyable:
If you haven’t, please use the 'search' feature at the top right of the page for your questions as they have probably been asked before. Remember, ‘Search’ is your friend.
If you wish to become PM (Private Message) capable, you need 15 posts. To get those 15 posts quickly, just go to the ‘New members introduce yourself here’ section and welcome enough new members to obtain your needed posts to PM.
Want to post a picture? Start a new thread or make a post, click ‘edit’, click on the ‘paper clip’ or ‘advanced’ and/or ‘manage attachments’ then ‘choose file’ then ‘upload’ and ‘submit’! If Iphone pics, you need to rename any additional pics as Iphone names its pics all the same, image.jpg.
Want to ‘like’ or thank’ someone’s comments? Use the ‘like’ button to the right or the ‘Thanks’ button, bottom right of any post you like. This saves you having to comment.
New members should be aware that the 'New Posts' link next to the 'Search' link top right of the info bar is a great way to see all of the posts you have missed since you were on the forum last. Remember to click 'mark forums read' under ‘quick links’ when you leave.
Post your vin in the Vehicle Datacard Request section to get a datacard (options on your car) free.

Welcome from NE England. Congratulations on your SLK.

If I'm not getting single figure out of mine, then I'm not enjoying it, so there's no real point in taking it for a blast

Hi and welcome from the UK Midlands... I didn't buy the SLK55 for it's fuel consumption, so perhaps best for me not to comment on MPG!

Hi Zorrosmart, a warm welcome from Southern Arizona. Good to have you on board. Wow, the R172 250 CDI or English roads must be totally different than this side of the pond. My little 280 gets about 24 MPG (combined city/highway). Enjoy the people, the forum, and top down cruisin'.

We don't get the diesel here in the US, unfortunately...if I could get one here with a 6-speed stick, I would. I figured that your highlight example works out to 46.4 mpg US. But our SLK280 3.0-liter V6 delivers better than 33mpg (US gallons) at 65mph on cruise which is pretty darn good. Saw over 37 for a while this last week, but that was on a long downhill run from the crest of the Sierra Nevada mountains at nearly nine thousand feet to the floor of the Central Valley of California at about a thousand...in short, the engine loafed the whole way down.

The way this forum runs makes my brain hurt. You post in the right area of the forum and they move it somewhere you're far less likely to get a discussion going. Very odd.

I basically use mine in a similar way. I generally don't start the car unless I'm going to do at least 50 miles, so I reckon our use is pretty similar.

I can get 50-60mpg very easily with the roof up. 60mpg is easiest to achieve in motorway contra flows with the speed limiter set to 50mph. 45mpg is normal with the roof down. I tend to drive mine in S because it causes me pain physically when it tries to drag itself along at 1000rpm in 7th gear.

The thing that jumped out for me is that you managed to get 73l of diesel into a car with a 60l fuel tank. I've commented on this before, but you're the first person to confirm that you can get more than 60l in the fuel tank. I think I've been filling the expansion tank as it takes ages to get the last couple of litres in.

Anyway - good to hear you're enjoying it. I'll see you back in R172-land once you've been welcomed.

I was informed that all UK cars in CDi variant come with the 80l tank

This is noted on the production build code allocation also

80l is a HUGE fuel tank. That's almost 18 gallons so it should cost £100 to fill the car, and I'm not able to do that much.

Just filled mine up for the first time yesterday. Reserve fuel message had been up for a day or so and when I filled it up it had about a 45 mile range left.

It took exactly 55 litres (12 gallons for us oldies) so mine looks to be 60 litre tank as per the user manual or 13 gallons as near as dammit.

Still running in, if there is such a thing these days, but who remembers when new cars used to display a "Running in Please Pass" sticker?

Just taking it easy for the first 1,000 miles before I try it in anger.

Eighteen gallons is the standard fuel tank size for North America-bound SLKs no matter the power plant. Last week we drove 535 miles between fill-ups on one tank; the car drank 17.167 gallons after that so that's at or a little beyond a reasonable limit. We were cutting it a little fine there! The 250 CDI ought to deliver nearly 800 miles of range at 46mpg! That kind of mileage & range would take us from our home in Hillsboro to Salt Lake City, UT or Bozeman, MT on one tank of fuel. Impressive. You folks in the UK ought to be able to get from Land's End in Cornwall to the north coast of Scotland on a single tank.

Is that 18 US or 18 Imperial gallons? 18 US gallons is 70 litres.

According to the UK handbook, the fuel rank is 60 litres and the AMG SLK 55 has a 70l fuel rank because it's a bit thirstier

60 litres is almost exactly 13 Imperial gallons, or enough to go 600-700 miles on one tank. Still pretty darned impressive.

I have to be honest, I nailed mine from day 1. Partly because I only have the car for 10,000 miles per year but mainly because my experience with modern diesels is they use oil if you don't work them hard all the time (although that is based on VAG TDi experience).

I had mine on a rolling road at 12,000 miles and it made 217 PS and 530Nm torque. Well up on the claimed 204 PS and 500Nm torque.

I put 65.5 liters/17.3 US gallons in our SLK250 non-diesel for the first fillup. The manual says it's a 70 liter (18.5 US gal.) tank. We got only 20.8 mpg for the first tank, 24.8 for the second.
I am driving the car like an elderly lady for the first 1000 miles, only 850 done so far. I suspect my wife is not entirely adhering to this program. It's her car.

Good point! But I can't bring myself to thrash it just yet.

My wife is on her second Diesel Ford Kuga and I've just sold my Volvo C30 D5 so we do have some experience with diesels. Point to note mine has just had big problems with MAF, EGR, DPF clogging up, but then I did drive it like an old man most of the time. Something about the mpg figure going up that appealed.

I vowed not to do that again with a diesel! Incidentally my Wife drives like she's late for the school run, late for work most of the time and the Kuga's have both been fine (mpg not though!) there's a lesson there.

SPORT mode tomorrow methinks!
